Reboarding After COVID-19

In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will focus on how to effectively reboard non-teaching professionals

in education back into the workplace.

Reboarding: The What, Why & How of Bringing People Back Post-COVID

Reboarding is common for staff members who have been away from your organization for an extended time, most often for medical purposes, parental leave, or secondment. Organizations all over the world are starting to think about the return to work as we begin to move past the worst of COVID-19. We will all eventually get back to something that resembles "normal," but how do you effectively bring your employees back on board and ensure they feel safe, secure, and ready to perform? In this article, we will discuss the concept of reboarding, why it is essential, and how to reboard effectively.

Reboarding After COVID-19. Your (Second) First Impression Is Key.

The concept of reboarding isn’t new. Reboarding is how an organization brings an employee back to work after a prolonged period such as a return from maternity leave, sabbatical, or long-term disability. What is new is the sheer magnitude of people who will be returning due to the phasing out of the stay-home orders amid COVID-19. Also new, of course, mass anxiety, concerns for safety, worries about family care, and constant media coverage, to name a few. Here are a few helpful tips and best practices to perfect your reboarding strategy to carefully and continuously communicate with your employees as they come back on board.

Back to Work: How to Strategically Reboard Your Workforce

As a society, we must bounce back to social connectivity to prevent productivity and relationships from being forever damaged. A solid reboarding plan for the workforce allows us to return to work with trust, and with full productivity and engagement. An efficient reboarding method will enable employees to respect differences and look for opportunities to be more creative and innovative. With a reboarding plan, organizations will be able to recognize common goals and ways to accomplish them. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind as you reintroduce your employees to their workplace.

After the Lockdown, Help Employees Reconnect and Learn From Each Other During Reboarding

As we prepare to welcome employees back to work, we need to prepare to help them reacclimate to the organization and re-connect with each other. When they return to work, the environment will not be the same as when they left it. The goal in “reboarding” is to help employees deal with their thoughts and feelings as soon as possible, so the healing begins, and full productivity can resume. Here are some helpful tips for holding a successful reboarding workshop.

Reboard to New Cultural Norms

Reboarding is about your employees learning new cultural norms, equipment, and space to be successful. The goal of a reboarding campaign is to make employees comfortable as they navigate through the uncharted waters of changing social distancing into safe physical distancing. Turn your reboarding plan into a positive campaign, celebrating your employees’ return to work. Here are ten suggestions to turn your reboarding plan into a positive campaign, celebrating your employees’ return to work.

Referrals are the most significant source of hires for most organizations, constituting around 40% of the workforce. If you're patiently waiting for someone in your network to think of you for an opening on their team, you might be waiting a very long time. Instead, when you see an opening that sparks your interest, it's best to ask yourself: "Whom do I know here?" If you're able to identify someone you know, either personally or professionally, here's a template to enlist their help:

Dear [name],

I hope you've been finding a good rhythm over these last few months and that you're taking care!

I'm reaching out because I noticed [name of org] recently posted a [name of position] position, and it spoke to me. As you know, I'm a big fan of your organization and am excited that you're now hiring for this role. I plan to apply this week.

Please look out for my application [- or - Would you mind flagging my name for the hiring team?] and let me know if it's a fit for the position. If you have suggestions for additional steps I might take to demonstrate my interest in the position, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your support!

All my best,

[your name]
