Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Taking liberties with describing your work experience

A few years ago, I worked with a client who was planning a transition from teaching to edtech customer success. Reviewing his resume immediately confused me. His job title was teacher, but his job bullets only described work with “products” and “customers.” The client explained to me that in an attempt to get his resume noticed by relevant recruiters and hiring managers, he was describing his students as customers, and lesson plans and curriculum as products. While students and curriculum may be the customer and product of an edtech company, describing them that way in the context of teaching felt false and frankly confusing. If I was the edtech hiring manager reviewing that resume, I would have recognized the “trick,” found it disingenuous, and moved on to more qualified applicants (especially if there was no other connection to the company or product listed in the application).

Since then, I’ve seen other job-seekers take extreme liberties with the language in their resumes, and career content creators recommend this strategy too. And when I say liberties, I don’t mean changing the word “training” to “professional development” to match the keywords in a job description. Most recently, I saw a post on LinkedIn encouraging teachers who are aspiring project managers to refer to lesson planning as “project management”, and classroom management as “team leadership”. Again, this guidance gave me extreme pause. Project management typically involves overseeing the work of other adults, vendors, budgets, and timelines. While there is some transferrable skillset in planning lessons or units (like backwards planning to meet a goal), it is not the same. Similarly, there are transferable skills in creating a strong classroom culture and managing the behavior and performance of children, but they are not the same as managing adults (including the very high-stakes work of making hiring decisions, determining compensation, creating performance plans, etc.). Not to mention, many of the people who throw in terms like “project management” or “team management” into their resume never include specifics on the projects or teams to provide any credibility on this front.
I am a BIG fan of framing your experience in a way that will speak to hiring managers, and job-seekers must be even more strategic when doing this during a career pivot. But teachers, there’s a better way.

  • Instead of equating your work leading a classroom to leading a team of adults, identify opportunities (or seek them out!) when you have formally or informally coached your peers, taken on leadership of committees, or managed working groups. For example, a teacher may also be a grade level or department chair, or play a key role in leading a school-wide initiative.
  • Instead of equating lesson or unit planning to project management, identify opportunities (or seek them out!) to manage school-wide initiatives like a book fair (involves selecting/managing a vendor, recruiting and managing staff and/or volunteers, day-of-logistics, and so much more). Other ideas in the school setting involve fundraisers, college visits, a partnership with a museum, leading a speaker series, etc.
  • Instead of equating your students to customers* when applying to a role in Edtech, highlight your experience using that product. Maybe you piloted usage in your classroom, then trained the other teachers at your school to implement with fidelity. If you don’t have experience with that product, download a free trial and learn a ton, and write about the hours of experience you have familiarizing yourself with the company and product instead. While you’re at it, obtain some certifications via Coursera or a similar platform in the required technology platforms you see listed on the job posting, and include that on your resume as well. *In an interview or cover letter you should absolutely leverage your experience teaching students as having a deep understanding of the needs of the company customer - this is a strong move and is a much better way of framing your experience!
