Designated celebration days or months have the ability to spark meaningful change and address the pressing issues that persist. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. As this year's Black History Month arrives, the author of this article addresses the question: "What more can be done for more meaningful change to happen?"

Black History Month traces its origins back to 1926. While absolutely worthy of celebration, the stories of African American contributions to our society have become repetitive over the years. We know about Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr., of course. But our American history lessons skip over so many other African American achievers.

It is incredibly important to highlight the achievements of black educators in the teaching profession. Not only is it crucial to give them long-overdue recognition, but it also helps to remind us of how far the educational system has come – and far we have left to go. We'd love to share this article which highlights twelve black educators who made a huge impact on history.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
I’m interviewing for a role and have professional relationships with senior leaders on other teams. Is it appropriate to reach out to these individuals?
|

|
A client of mine is interviewing for an exciting job, and they’ve realized they have a former colleague on another team at this organization. Their question to me - is it appropriate or strategic to reach out to their contact?
Having strong relationships with leaders or board members at your target organizations can add value at different points in your job-search process:
- Prior to applying: At this stage, connecting with your network working at a target organization can help you gain insight to the role, team, or organization, and get feedback on your application. Your network can also flag your application for hiring managers or talent teams.
- During your interviewing process: Your network may provide further insight about the role - specific gaps or opportunities on your target team, or the interviewing style/format you might expect.
- Offer stage: Your network can help you strategically think through your offer. Perhaps you have some lingering questions or concerns about the role or team (and you don’t feel comfortable addressing them with the hiring team or recruiter), and your network can provide insight. Perhaps you wonder if your salary requirements or the offer itself is competitive - your network can also shed light here
Just because your network can provide insight and support doesn’t mean they actually have insight, feel comfortable helping you, or have the capacity to do so. When reaching out to your network for support, consider operating with a spirit of generosity - they may not respond or decline.
