How to Lead with Clarity of Purpose, Plan, and Responsibility

When a team—a group of people working together toward a common goal—has clarity, everyone has a clear understanding of everything they need to know about the work required to effectively achieve their goal. Unfortunately, leaders tend to overestimate how much clarity their team has.

New Principal Series: Navigating the Waters of Clarity: A Personal Reflection

Clarity is one of the fundamental guiding principles, especially for new Principals. In this reflection, the author of this article and video invites her audiences to explore the profound importance of clarity, particularly in the context of hiring, retaining quality educators, and seeking workplace cultures (schools) that are grounded in clarity.

How to Create Clarity and Cohesion in a Remote Team

Creating clarity is beneficial for any team. But it is especially beneficial for remote, distributed, or hybrid teams. As a remote team ourselves, we'd love to share this article where the author goes over the three pillars for creating team clarity and cohesion, and how it can be applied to remote teams.

How long can I expect my job search to take?

My clients often ask me, “how long should I expect this job-search to take?” Oof, I wish I could look into a crystal ball and give an answer. The typical interview process in K-12 can average between 4 weeks - 12 weeks, depending on many, many factors. If you land the first role you apply to, that means your job search may just take a few weeks or a couple months. But if you aren’t offered a position right away, you may find yourself applying to many roles, at staggered times, which will prolong your search. While I can’t guarantee how long your search will take, I can share tips for strategically approaching your search to minimize length of time in process:

  • Know your Personal Value Proposition before you apply: what are the specific problems you can solve for an employer, and what proof points can you share that demonstrate your capacity to solve these problems?
  • Identify the types of roles you plan on applying to - what is the job function, job industry, and level of seniority (focus less on job titles, like Director vs Manager, and more on the scope of the role when you read a job description).
  • Review your resume and LinkedIn profile - do they clearly communicate your capacity to perform this job (credentials, scope of role, proof points of excellence with many, many data points)? For example, a recent client of mine is a principal, but applying to non-principal roles. When we reviewed their resume, everything screamed “principal!” - it made sense that they weren’t receiving interviews for roles outside of that function.
  • Create a list of your target employers - where would you LOVE to work? Once you do, audit their LinkedIn career pages, with a special focus on their “People” tab. Are you connected to any of these employees? If yes, consider reaching out to share about your current job search and ask if they’re aware of any openings that would be a great fit (and share exactly the kind of roles you’re searching for), OR, if you already see a great role posted, ask if they’re open to flagging your name for the hiring manager once you apply.
  • Don’t limit your outreach to your network working at your target companies - reach out to those you know and trust to ask for support. Share the kind of work that energizes you and what you’re focused on in your search. Ask if they can make introductions, send you open roles, give advice, etc.
  • Turn on your green “open to opportunities” banner on LinkedIn if you are publicly searching. If not, turn this feature on privately for recruiters.
  • Track your job search - where have you applied, and what is your status in each process? This data will give you insight about where you can refocus your energy, whether it’s applying to less senior roles (if you are constantly rejected after applying) or working on your interview skills.
  • Be flexible - that might mean simultaneously applying to in-person and remote roles, even if your total preference is remote. Remote positions are more competitive as there are fewer of them, especially in Education.
