Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Writing about your personal impact that was a result of collective efforts.

|
“How do I write about work accomplishments that are a result of collective effort? How do I not make it look like I’m taking full credit?”
Whether my clients are teachers or district superintendents, this question comes up A LOT. I work with such incredible, humble professionals, who, out of fear of appearing to take credit for collective work, take almost NO credit at all! This translates into resumes showing limited results and generic job-seeking materials.
Instead, identify the unique role you played in leading to the impact and specify what actions/strategies you personally leveraged that helped lead to that collective result. For example, a school district Chief Talent Officer might not oversee curriculum and instruction, but their successful efforts to transform teacher and school leader development lead to gains in student achievement. So instead of simply claiming that they were uniquely responsible for increasing the district rating from a C to A, the bullet might read “Played a critical role in propelling Main Street District from a C to A letter grade by overhauling the district-wide talent development strategy, including implementing a year-long leadership fellowship for school and instructional leaders with a deep focus on instructional coaching” The bullet could also have sub-bullets with relevant metrics showing the impact.
In education, so much of our work is collective - that is expected. Focus on your unique role, name the stakeholders with whom you partner, and own your contributions!
