Education News
In this edition of Leaders in Education, we are bringing you interesting news and stories from across education.
A group of high school and college students from around the world who met on Discord, a social network popular among video gamers, are putting their tech skills to work against the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. Their effort began in early April, when Harvard University student Lucas Chu sent a message to a group of people he had met on Discord. His idea was to organize students who would make data visualizations to help show trends in the spread of COVID-19 and to counter false narratives about the virus.
The College Board Is Sharing Student Data Once Again
A Consumer Reports investigation found that the education giant is sending info to tech companies in ways that may contradict its own policies. For millions of students, the College Board is the gatekeeper to higher education. According to the Consumer Reports investigation, the organization uses that role to collect and share information on those students—despite apparent promises to the contrary.
Amazon-backed Startup Brings Voice Education App to Google Devices
Bamboo Learning, a Seattle startup led by Jeff Bezos’ former technology adviser, launched its voice-based education app, Bamboo Luminaries, for Google Assistant-enabled devices including Google Nest, Google Home, and Android phones. The expansion to Google devices is notable as Bamboo’s apps were previously only available on Amazon Alexa devices.
Eighth Grader Builds IBM Watson-Powered AI Chatbot for Students Making College Plans
A bored 13-year-old from New Jersey used COVID-19 isolation to take an online IBM class, and within two weeks created and launched Rita, a fully functional chatbot that helps students make college plans.
Tiny schools from the sprawling cities of Africa to the suburbs of Austin are reshaping the education landscape. Some of these microschools operate outside formal systems, some operate in networks that are spreading around the world, and some operate outside the current conception of education altogether. Microschools can quickly address underserved student populations and demonstrate innovative new practices and staffing strategies.
ClassTag Raises $5M for Family Relations and Communications
ClassTag, a complimentary family communication platform for schools that supports more than 60 languages, raised $5 million in seed funding. The platform says it has grown to 2 million users across 25,000 schools in the United States. Without downloading an app, parents using ClassTag can get communications through their preferred channel: email, SMS, app, web, or even paper if they are entirely offline. Any announcements or messaging will be automatically translated into numerous languages. The simplicity of the platform is stress-tested by ClassTag’s goal of ensuring access for any parent, regardless of socioeconomic class or work schedule.
