Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to position yourself to find a great job in a new city, 1-2 years away?
|

Where are all my long-term planners? If you know you’ll be relocating in 1-3 years, it’s not too early to start preparing for a successful job-search in a new city. Assuming you know the roles and industries you’re targeting (i.e. fundraiser within an education nonprofit, high school principal within a charter school network, chief within a traditional school district, etc.), here are some strategies I’d recommend:
- Connect with people who live in your target city and are in the same field of work, who can help you understand the professional/political/organizational landscape. I cannot stress how invaluable local connections can be in helping you understand who are the most influential employers, who is hiring, and how different entities work together! If you don’t currently know people in your target industry, in your target city, consider posting on professional social media groups (like on LinkedIn or Facebook), asking friends and colleagues if they have connections, reaching out to the alumni office at your alma mater or professional bootcamps/fellowships, etc. Some of the most valuable connections I made when moving cities four years ago came from one of my former clients posting on a professional alumni facebook group on my behalf.
- Make a list of target employers in your city. Find those companies/institutions on LinkedIn and follow their company page, and also hit the “I’m interested” button (if enabled) on their About tab. As you’re visiting company pages, review the section entitled “Pages people also viewed” on the right side of the screen. This is an excellent place to find peer organizations (both local and remote) to the current ones you’re researching. Follow them too!
- Reach out to internal recruiters and/or leaders at your target organization for informational meetings about their organization. Clarify that you’re planning ahead for a long-term move and are excited to connect with leaders at your target organizations to learn more about their work, how they structure their teams, and the big problems they’re tackling in the coming years. This is a great opportunity to also ask if they can recommend other organizations you might research as you’re planning, and if they’re willing to make introductions. I have been on the receiving end of these calls as a recruiter and hiring manager and always loved connecting with people who were curious and planning thoughtfully, even if it didn’t help me fill a role in the short term (I also viewed it my role as a recruiter and leader to ensure strong brand representation with external audiences - that means any conversation was an opportunity to promote the organization and generate goodwill).
- Make sure your job-seeking toolkit is ready for prime time. Even if you’re actively applying for roles, once you start networking people will begin looking at your LinkedIn profile. They may ask for a resume! Make sure your materials are updated and easy to access. Create a folder on your computer, external drive, or google drive to save materials, create a portfolio, etc.
- Turn on the “open to opportunities” feature on LinkedIn (privately, just for recruiters), and indicate your target roles, city, and that you’re “flexible, I am casually looking” on your start date. If your current team knows that you’re planning a long-term move, you can also consider adding that information to the “About” section of your LinkedIn profile (something like: “I’m relocating to [insert city] in Summer 2025 and am excited to connect about future opportunities or simply learn more about the education landscape in the city!”
- Don’t assume that because your current role is remote that you can work remotely from a different city/state. Companies may have restrictions related to taxes, employment benefits, etc that limit where their remote employees live. Make sure to clarify those things with your employer early on so there are no surprises when you relocate and are suddenly terminated (I’ve seen this happen).
