'No One Is Paying What They Used to': Job Hopping Isn't As Lucrative As It Used to Be, According to New Data

New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the pay gap between stayers and switchers has narrowed to its smallest in a decade. In January and February, workers who stayed in their roles saw a 4.6% pay increase, while those who switched jobs saw a slightly higher rise of 4.8%. As the quit rate drops and employers gain more leverage, job seekers are facing tougher competition and lower salaries. Read the full article for more on the changing labor market.

Career pathways for school leaders exiting the principalship?

I am so grateful to everyone who reads this column week after week, and a special shout out to those of you who send in questions for me to tackle in upcoming newsletters. Check out this recent reader question and my response below:
“As a school administrator with 25+ years of experience who is looking to transition out of the school building, what kind of jobs should I be looking for if I'm looking for a remote position to support my desire to continue working in the field of education and be present for my children?”

First of all, thank you for this excellent question! I regularly coach school leaders navigating job searches. My first reaction is that the reader’s question, “what kind of jobs should I be looking for…” is the wrong one. Instead, I would encourage them to reflect on the kind of problems they’ve enjoyed solving over the years in school leadership, and how they want to spend their time professionally. “Remote” and “Education” are not narrow enough!
School administrators typically spend their time in the following ways (which of course can differ by school structure, size, the kind of admin role, etc.):

  • Leadership of other administrators and administrative teams
  • Strategic Planning
  • Instructional Walk-throughs and teacher feedback conversations
  • Budget development and management
  • Overseeing school operations at a high level (transportation, nutrition, school schedules, technology, etc.)
  • Family Engagement
  • Training
  • School culture
  • Event planning
  • Fundraising/Partnering with the district fundraisers
  • Recruiting and Hiring
  • Performance Management
  • HR compliance, employee relations, etc.
  • Community Engagement/Partnerships

I would advise the question writer to reflect on their own job responsibilities and identify the aspects of their job where they have demonstrated exceptional skill, have a track record of results, AND WANT TO CONTINUE PERFORMING! They should consider identifying 2-3 functional areas that they’d like to hone in on in their search, and to document wins they’ve had in each of these areas (to be used on their resume, in interviews, etc.). When making a career pivot, demonstrating capacity to perform a new role is done best through data versus general or theoretical statements (i.e. “Under my leadership where I drove an entire re-structure of our instructional team and academic strategy, my school had the highest number of students who passed the state standardized exam - a significant achievement in even larger part because we previously had the lowest number 4 years ago” vs “I enjoy training people and think I’d be great training other principals on implementation of new curriculum”).

Once the question writer has reflected on the job functions that bring them joy, and where they’ve demonstrated skill, I’d encourage them to review education-specific job boards (like Truly Hired), and search by that job function to get a sense of the kinds of roles that are available at this time.

In my work with principals who are exiting the school building, I’ve seen them step into remote roles in the areas of Leadership Coaching, Education consulting (coaching principals or district leaders in specific areas), Implementation or Account Management for EdTech companies, Managing Director of Program for Education Fellowships, Learning & Development for Education (and non-Education) organizations, etc. The great news is that there’s not a single pathway, but that also means it’s super critical that this job-seeker take the time to reflect on their strengths and interests before perusing job boards.

The last note: Remote doesn’t always mean an increased ability to be more present (though of course it can!). In this job market, where there are fewer remote positions and many more job-seekers applying to those roles, I’d also encourage the question writer to explore in-person and hybrid positions with school districts and local education orgs. They may find that many of the roles outside of the school building allow for the flexibility they seek, and could receive less applications than the remote positions.
