7 Tips for Managing a Remote Team
A lot of times, it's not so easy to work at optimal levels, especially if that sort of "productivity" involves working remotely. Productivity embodies a lot of things. Most of which come from self-motivation and dedication. If you want to know how to manage remote teams and increase productivity, this post might help you become a better version of yourself.
The work environment (regardless of whether you are at work or at home) is filled with "noise" that can distract you from focusing on important tasks. That's why it is important to take a proactive approach and arrange your workspace in a way that helps you clear your mind enough to do your best work.
Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Are you trying to find your new normal in a world that no longer feels normal? Me too. Especially as a job seeker, it can be hard to know where to start and how to focus your search. Here’s a checklist of actions you can take in the next few weeks to make job search progress even during this uncertain time:
1. Pull up sites like TrulyHired and LinkedIn to see roles posted in the last few days. Make a list of who is hiring, the job titles, and the skills they seek. It’s likely that expertise in areas like distance learning and technology are going to continue being highly valuable in the Education space.
2. Have expertise in those in-demand skills? Make sure your resume and LinkedIn reflect those skills within the context of your past roles (as opposed to just listing skills in a Skills section, share how you utilized specific skills to achieve a particular goal). Here’s an example: “Re-designed lesson plans for a virtual learning environment and leveraged the video conference platform Zoom to reach 100% of students and families during school closures.”
3. I’ve always found that having a daily goal can help me feel in control when things feel messy and uncertain. Once you have a list of organizations hiring, set goals around job applications & outreach to hiring managers/recruiters. I recommend you do both – submit an application and also connect with the hiring team/recruiter via LinkedIn or company. Share that you’ve applied, reiterate your excitement about the role and organization, and communicate that you look forward to an update from their team.
4. Write a short Personal Value Proposition about your areas of expertise and interest. Share it via your own networks and ask friends/family/colleagues to share on your behalf. Need inspiration? One of my current clients wrote her bio/personal value proposition and asked another friend to share it on a professional Facebook group page yesterday. Within hours, she was connected to a hiring manager with an open role. They have a call set up for today! Ask for help; we’re all in this together.
