As WorkTogether celebrates our ten year anniversary, we took some time to look back at how we got here: how did we get started, what have we retained, and how have we grown to better meet employer and job seeker need. This Case Study touches on our roots, our most important pivots, and what we’re doubling down on in 2025.
|
|
|
In conversations with our partners, clients, and funders, we’re hearing the need to redefine what is feasible and possible in 2025. Between national instability, fierce competition for funding, and a wildly fluctuating job market, our partners have to make tough decisions about their priorities. However, particularly because of that instability, there are still pockets of opportunity! This landscape overview pulls out the most relevant trends for our space, and shares innovative strategies for how organizations can best meet this moment.

|
|
Following this theme through, as orgs navigate strategic shifts to best meet the moment, company culture is emerging as a true differentiator for success. This article pulls out easy-to-implement actions for organizations already managing a lot! One nugget we found particularly interesting from this article is identifying team “microcultures” and being inclusive of those when it comes to defining, iterating and operationalizing organizational culture.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Leveraging AI in your job search
|
|
|
I first wrote about utilizing ChatGPT in a job-search back in May 2023. In the two years since ChatGPT entered the conversation, we’ve seen its use explode across all functions of life, including job-searching. So here is an absolutely NOT complete list of strategies to employ and avoid when using AI to enhance your job searching:
Some strategies to employ:
- Generate a list of employers in your region or industry that are focused on the problems you want to solve. For example, one of my clients wants to pivot from working in a school district to foundations/philanthropy. We used ChatGPT to generate a list of family foundations with education portfolios in her region.
- Customize your resume for specific roles and employers. Copy and paste the content of your resume into a tool like ChatGPT (or AI tool of your choice) and ask it to recommend strategies for optimizing the language and/or format based on employer or industry. I’ve had clients use this strategy when pivoting from research for traditional/federally funded organizations to innovative ed-tech start-ups. Same job, but different environment and the resume should appeal to a new audience.
- Conduct background research on an employer prior to your interview or networking conversation (i.e. quickly review their mission, history, recent news, employee reviews, etc.). You could spend all day reading an employer’s entire website and search for news articles, or conduct searches which most align to the job for which you’re interviewing.
- Anticipate interview questions for that specific role and employer.
- Audit your resume or cover letter for feedback.
- If writing a cover letter drives you mad with rage or anxiety, consider using AI to generate an outline but PLEASE fill in the content yourself (or risk submitting THE SAME letter as other writers).
Some strategies to avoid:
- Using AI to write your cover letters or application essays*. Recruiters can typically spot AI use like this right away. Chances are high that other applicants are doing this as well, and you’re all submitting eerily similar work. *If writing is not your forte, using AI to give you a solid foundation to build upon and personalize may work well. So think about AI as a tool versus the author.
- Using AI to update your resume without conducting your own edits or re-writes.
- Cold connecting on LinkedIn with AI-generated outreach. Recruiters know you didn’t write those messages because they’ve received multiple identical ones that week. Stand out for your personalized touch with messaging, not your use of AI.
- Forgetting to delete the ChatGPT initial response to your sample writing query, where it says “Of course.” and introduces the sample language (i.e. “How does this sound?”).. It can happen to anyone, so proofread, and again, PERSONALIZE any content ChatGPT creates for you to be shared externally!
- Using AI to write an email to a recruiter after not using AI to write earlier messages - the change in tone, voice, vibe, etc can be jarring and obvious! …..
The rules of engagement for AI in the job-search will continue to evolve. If any of the ideas in the “some strategies to employ” section piqued your interest, feel free to conduct additional research (maybe via AI!) for the best prompts and inputs to achieve your intended goal.
