April is a busy interview season for education-sector job seekers, and I’m often asked for interview advice. While every interview should be tailored, I consistently come back to three fundamentals:
- Clearly communicate how you will solve problems for the organization
- Show that you are a safe, low-risk hire (you’ll deliver results and stick around)
- Build a genuine connection with the interviewer
If you do those three things well, you significantly increase your chances of moving forward—or landing the offer.
Good luck out there.
- John

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

I have a networking call with a senior leader! I have no clue how to use our time together, help!

Network, network, network. Everyone tells you it’s a key part of your job search. They may advise you on the kinds of folks to approach, and even how to secure a meeting, but they may not tell you what to do once you have the call scheduled. This was a recent predicament with one of my clients.
My best advice: if you schedule the conversation, you should drive the conversation. When you show up to a meeting without a clue about what you hope to gain from your time together or don’t articulate your hopes, then you’re asking the person on the other end of the phone/zoom/table to figure this out for you. They may figure wrong, and provide irrelevant advice that leaves you both dissatisfied.
Start a meeting thanking the person for their time, and share why you’re excited to speak to them and what you’re hoping to learn during your call. This matters, even if it’s a close connection and you tend to connect more informally.
Example:
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today. I was especially excited to have the space and time to catch up with you/connect with you because [insert something about their professional role, their employer, or their years of providing you with sound guidance]. More than anything, I was hoping we could chat more about [insert your high-level goals for the conversation - advice about applying to roles at their org, guidance about other orgs to research or ideas for connections you can seek out after the call, or industry-specific job-seeking advice]. Let me know how that sounds, and if there are things I can help you with as well.
Your connection will appreciate the clarity, and feel set-up to support you. That feels good for them, and for you!
