as help employees know which areas to focus on. However, those metrics should be
more than just their work output.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Does this job description seem like a good fit?
Job descriptions are not all created equally. Some are so bare that it leaves you with big questions. Some are so detailed that you have to ask yourself if one person can reasonably perform all those tasks. How can you figure out if it’s worth applying to a role based on the job description? Here’s some advice I offered a recent client who was wondering how to interpret a job description a friend had sent her. DON’T rely solely on the job description.
A job description might be written by a hiring manager who is close to the work, or by a recruiter/HR professional who may have limited information.
The hiring manager may just be posting an outdated description from the last time they hired for the role (which may be from YEARS ago), or perhaps they are deciding to cram all their hopes and dreams into a job description to see if a unicorn does indeed exist. The writer may also be intentionally vague just to see who applies. This can make reviewing job descriptions frustrating and not entirely helpful.
Instead, I encourage you to reach out to someone with more detailed information about the position to ask if they’d be open to a 15 minute conversation about the role. If you found the role online, consider reaching out to the job poster, or email the recruiter or hiring manager if their email is shared on the job description. LinkedIn can also be a great resource to find recruiters/hiring managers.

Here are some sample questions you can ask in that short meeting or via email:
- “From my review of the job description, my impression is that I'd spend the majority of my time on X projects with some time on Y. Does that align with how you see the role?”
- “What will be the biggest, most pressing priorities for the person filling this role?”
- “Who is your ideal candidate given the needs of the role in terms of how they like to spend their time/skills?"
There are many more questions you can ask in a short meeting, but these first few will help you move beyond the language in the job description and determine if the role is a good fit for your skills and interests.
