Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Customizing a resume versus a cover letter
|
|
|
“Do I need to tailor my resume to each role if I’m already writing highly personalized cover letters?”
A client who is in the midst of a major job search reached out to me with this question recently. Here’s how I responded:
When writing a cover letter, highly personalized is always the way to go! When deciding where to spend your time - personalizing a cover letter OR a resume - the answer is more nuanced. Recruiters and hiring managers have conflicting advice and feelings about cover letters. I can tell you everyone is reading your resume, but it’s possible some of the people reviewing your application are either skipping your cover letter or quickly skimming through.
A strong application will include a tailored resume and personalized cover letter (even when optional, unless explicitly asked to NOT include), but if you have to choose where to spend your time prioritize the resume.
Tailoring a resume doesn’t have to take hours! If including, ensure your headline and executive summary section (what I usually call “career highlights”) are aligned to the role you’re targeting. Then, ensure each of your past professional roles has bullets which directly speak to your capacity to perform that role. Lastly, make sure the skills and/or software you share align with the requirements of the role, and include relevant training/certifications.
When you write a personalized cover letter (the only kind of cover letter you should write!), make sure to explicitly answer the following questions:
1. Why are you interested in this employer?
2. Why are you interested in this job?
3. Why should they hire you for this role?
