Treating hiring like an emergency response in education isn't sustainable. This guide shifts the focus from reactive staffing to intentional ecosystem building: creating development pathways that differentiate support for new versus experienced educators, establishing authentic coaching systems, and distributing leadership opportunities throughout the organization. The insight? Retention isn't about compensation; it's about conditions and growth.

Even the world's most successful companies struggle with succession planning, and the reasons reveal critical lessons for education leaders. When boards wait until someone's leaving to think about replacement, they create toxic jockeying for position and miss opportunities to build talent pipelines. The solution? Treat succession as an ongoing cultural practice, not an emergency response.

What We’re Reading Right Now
The corporate world just caught up to what great educators already know! New research confirms that adaptability, creativity, and sound judgment matter more than technical credentials when building high-performing teams. For education hiring managers, this reinforces the importance of assessing human capabilities alongside traditional qualifications.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
What is a great question to ask at the end of a recruiter screening call that isn’t related to the hiring process, or too in-the-weeds about the role or team culture?
So many of my clients have screening calls with recruiters this week, which is always a cause for celebration! A screening call is typically the first stage of an interviewing process, and is an opportunity for the talent acquisition team to verify a candidate’s experience/qualification, and alignment with the the organizational mission and role-specific compensation/location/schedule. At this stage, the recruiter will likely be unable to discuss team culture, answer in-depth questions about the long-term vision for the role (i.e. “what does success look like in the first 90 days…”), or about your potential future boss’s leadership style. So, assuming they proactively bring up hiring process specifics and compensation/location/schedule, what can you ask the recruiter at the end of your call?
Don’t ask: “Is there anything about me giving you pause that I can clarify for you?” (I’ve been asked that before, more than once).
Do check for understanding: “From this conversation and my review of the job description, my understanding is that you’re really looking for someone who will [share your understanding of the problem you’d be solving if hired into the role.] Did I capture that correctly? Was there anything related to that, which you were hoping we’d discuss and that I can speak to now or in a follow-up conversation?
Why checking for understanding works:
You provide a chance for a thoughtful conversation, even if it’s just a few minutes long, re-iterate that you are excited about the role and thinking about it in a very intentional way, and create a space to provide additional information that doesn’t highlight your deficits (like the example I shared first).
