Advocating for your needs and values in a selection process

In recent conversations with my colleagues in the Talent Acquisition space, the concept of  “bringing your full self” to an interview process came up. In many ways, that’s such a stellar way to communicate your unique perspective and value add. It can also be a strategic way for you to gauge how your values are received by potential colleagues and if you’ll be happy in your new role and organization. However, we’ve noticed that candidates are sharing personal information on job applications, interviews, or public social media posts (i.e. LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) that might ultimately deter an offer. So, where is the line between showing up authentically versus revealing sensitive, unrelated information? Here are some best practices we’ve seen and heard in our conversations.

Do…

    • Own your value proposition and communicate it across your job-seeking materials and branding strategy. Don’t minimize how amazing you are at coordinating hundreds of volunteers for a high-stakes event, or writing a curriculum which students truly connect with and learn from.
    • Be yourself. Wear clothes and accessories that make you feel confident and true to yourself! Share your values. Don’t hide the best parts of working with you.
    • Advocate for your own needs. Hiring managers and hiring committee members should pronounce your name right, use your correct pronouns, and provide any accommodations necessary for you to succeed in their process. If you already know that once a week you have a recurring medical appointment during the work day (for example, seeing a psychologist, allergist, or physical therapist), it’s ok to check if there will be flexibility for you to make that appointment without revealing the nature of the healthcare professional you will see. This is better to bring up during an offer negotiation, when the employer is already bought into you joining their team, versus an initial interview.
    • Do inquire about what inclusion looks like in practice, i.e. gender neutral bathrooms, a welcoming and open team that goes out of their way to center access and equity into their daily work, a dedicated and actually comfortable pumping space for a nursing parent, etc. These are appropriate questions in an interview, but you can also consider asking them during an offer negotiation.
    • Know what you value in an employer, job, and team. For example, sharing that you want to join a team which embraces conflict, or can address both wins and losses in an emotionally safe space. You can communicate that you’re seeking a place that allows you to be your best self at work, but also be able to show up for your family/loved ones in your off hours. Or maybe, you really need to work in a place where you get to laugh a lot each day and join a team that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still meeting and exceeding ambitious goals. Know what you value and don’t be afraid to bring it up in interviews.

Think twice about…

    • Providing personal information like the number of dependents you have (i.e. kids, older relatives, etc.) or when you plan to start a family. Instead, consider sharing that it’s important for you to have the resources and support to thrive at work, and you are equally dedicated to thriving in your personal life. You want to find a workplace where that is the norm rather than the exception.
    • Including an “interests'' section on your resume (this has become more of an outdated practice given implicit bias that can occur in a hiring process - either hiring managers favoring people with shared interests/backgrounds or declining people they fear they can’t connect with personally). While shared interests can be a great way to find a point of connection with a hiring team during interview small talk, consider staying away from specifics having to do with religion, politics, and your family (unless these are topics that are relevant to the job - like applying to work on a political campaign or in a religious institution!).
