Too often, employee recognition has happened only at review time, and only by direct managers. This article lays out how leaders, peers and partners can all participate in year round recognition.

What WorkTogether is reading right now.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How can I determine if I’ll actually have Work/Life Balance in a new role?

I work with many clients who are leaving roles that have required an immense amount of their time and emotional energy. They want to secure roles which will provide them with “work/life balance,” but aren’t sure how to find a good fit. Here’s the thing, work/life balance is subjective! Below are some tips to help you find a role which works for you:

  1. Define work/life balance for yourself. Does that mean knowing you get to turn off your computer/phone at 5pm without needing to work in the evening, or does it mean working flexible hours in a hybrid setting?
  2. Carefully review job descriptions and career pages to get a sense of how the employer defines their work culture. What does the company say they value or embody? How does that sit with you?
  3. Learn about former employee experience. You can read reviews on Glassdoor (but take this with a grain of salt - websites like Glassdoor often reflect extreme experiences) or conduct a search in LinkedIn for people who used to work for this employer and reach out (they might not respond, but you never know!).
  4. Discuss work/life balance directly with the hiring team. When in doubt, just ask! Refrain from simply asking about work/life balance as this is a subjective thing, and instead share what you seek in a work culture/schedule - does this align with what they offer?
  5. Connect with current employees. If offered a role, and before accepting, ask if you can speak to a few other people on the team about their experience before making your final decision. Consider it a reverse reference check!
