Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Is it ok to take a new role that appears to be a demotion in title or scope?

Navigating a job search in 2023 is very different from how jobseekers navigated the search just 1.5 years ago. In 2021, there were more roles than job seekers. It was a great time to pivot, negotiate, and make very informed decisions. The reality is, layoffs have begun to hit the education sector hard and incredible talent are job-seeking at a more challenging time.

The good news is that many organizations in our sector are continuing to hire for great roles (find many of them listed on TrulyHired). The kinds of roles, job titles, and salary may differ from what a job-seeker might have expected not too long ago. So, does it make sense to hold out for the perfect role, or should you accept a role that is more of a lateral move or a “demotion”?

First of all, job-titles are misleading. Just because your title is Managing Director at one organization doesn’t mean you should only consider roles with the Managing Director title. Secondly, just because you might be in a senior role doesn’t mean you want to continue managing teams or large-scale projects. And you might have less room to negotiate salary right now, but when the economy improves so will your ability to advocate around total compensation.

Consider the following when approaching job-seeking and decision-making:

  • What are your non-negotiables with salary and benefits?
  • What kind of work do you want to perform and/or lead?
  • Do you need to be remote due to health-related/personal issues or your location (i.e. lack of good jobs in your city) or are you open to in-person/hybrid roles (even if you’d rather work from home)?
  • Would you like to be at a well-established organization or does the start-up environment interest you the most?
  • Do you need a new role now (salary/benefits), or do you have the luxury of time to explore and research?
