Building my confidence as a job-seeker

Many of my clients come to me struggling with negative self-talk and job search/career insecurities. Here are strategies we we implement to shift mindsets and build confidence:
- Clarify your value-add. Get specific in naming the 2-3 problems you are well-positioned to solve for an employer, versus all the things you’ve had experience with.
- Gather proof-points. Don’t just say you can solve a problem or problems. Prepare several examples of that problem-solving in action, including measurable outcomes that translate to an external audience.
- Document your wins. When my clients - especially those who operate with a high degree of humility and a drive to do whatever it takes for kids and communities - start listing out their accomplishments over-time, their entire demeanor changes. I hear them say things like, “wow, I forgot I did all that!” Fighting negative self talk is much easier when staring at a concrete list of goals met/exceeded.
- Surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed and recognize your many strengths. When I work with my clients to clarify their value propositions and celebrate their wins, they often respond with…”huh, you sound like my [insert trusted person] right now! They also tell me I’m really good at this particular thing.”
- Create tiered lists of target jobs informed by your understanding of your own qualifications and desired qualifications in a role. I would recommend dividing up this list into safety roles (you are probably overqualified), very aligned roles (you meet 100% of the qualifications - and have performed this role in an almost identical environment), and stretch roles (this role is likely a tier above the work you currently perform, but you have transferable experiences that are compelling). If you only apply for stretch positions and are constantly receiving rejections, this will only feed your insecurities. Track your job applications as well to understand where you’re gaining traction or getting stuck.
