Former Chief Master Sergeant from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations discusses the importance of trust. While people think of trust mostly in personal relationships, it extends to the workplace from colleagues to clients.

My Generation Isn’t Looking to Make Friends at Work

While Zoom meetings are still a strong trend, remote employees are spending less time socially with their colleagues. This has led to making less “close friends” at work which might be a key to better work-life balance.

One Part of Your Life You Shouldn’t Optimize

Many sources (ourselves included) put out a lot of content on how to make your calendar more efficient. However, relationships don't need to be efficient. Focus should remain on the value they add to your life.

Do I Really Need to Write A Cover Letter?

“If a cover letter is optional, do I really need to write one? Does anyone actually read them?”

I got this exact question from three different clients this week so figured it was worth addressing!

First of all, as a recruiter and hiring manager, I always read cover letters. When done well, a strong cover letter can connect the dots for a hiring manager about how a candidate’s experiences, skills, and values uniquely position them to add value in a role. But here’s the thing - most cover letters fail to do that. Instead, many candidates simply send the same personal statement out over and over again, reiterating what is already listed in a resume without creating explicit connections between their qualifications, the needs of the role, and the employer’s mission.

I absolutely cannot speak for all recruiters or hiring managers, and the truth is that there is a large camp who don’t read cover letters. Especially because so many of them are dull, not personalized to the role, and add little value to a candidate’s application. For some hiring managers, the “optional” part is a test to see who goes above and beyond. And for others, a cover letter might just help them see you as a stronger candidate if they’re not sure how your past experience relates to this particular role (especially if you’re trying to make a pivot, say, from teaching to corporate instructional design). If the cover letter is optional, I would only recommend writing it if you make sure to address these three questions:

1) Why are you interested in this company/organization? Use language from their mission statement, which is typically found on the job description or the “About” page on a company website.

2) Why are you interested in this particular role at the company/organization? Use specific language from the job description, highlighting which aspects of the role excite you and align well with your professional interests/skills/experience.

3) What experiences, skills, and values do you possess which uniquely qualify you to add value right away? Provide specific examples from your professional background which demonstrate your capacity to succeed in this particular role.
