For Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2024, it’s important to lean into his true legacy: nonviolence and its power to change systems. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, DEI&B practitioners in the workplace can focus on addressing systems and make sure that DEI&B efforts are clearly
tied to business outcomes.

Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech is one of the most famous pieces of rhetoric in American history. Aside from its historical significance, the speech also contained eight insights into what it takes to be a truly great leader, as pointed out by the author of this article.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
“I didn’t know you could do that!”
|

I work with many clients who are launching a job search for the first time in years, even decades, and they’re often operating with outdated or inaccurate search advice about the job market, recruiting practices, and strategies for landing a new role. Here are some recent tips I’ve shared with job seekers who have responded with: “I didn’t know you could do that!”:
- Write a resume longer than 1 page. Yes, you can! In fact, for professionals with more than 5-8 years of experience, a 2-page resume is likely ideal. For school system leaders, the length typically increases to 3-4 pages.
- Not include your full address from your resume. Instead, only include city and state.
- Remove older/less relevant roles and experiences. Your resume is your marketing document, not necessarily your work history (that will likely be requested as part of your job application, in addition to your resume). Instead, consider removing roles that are more than 15 years old, and from different industries. Or, simply list them in an “additional experience” section and remove all the bullets which are likely taking up a lot of room on your current document!
- Change your job title to match industry-specific terms. Many people have job-titles which aren’t reflective of the scope of their role, level of seniority, or simply don’t match how peer organizations entitle similar positions. In that case, simply put the job title which is a better representation of your work in parenthesis next to your job title, consider changing the job title (as long as it’s not a big stretch), or add a line to your resume bullet which sounds like “serve in the capacity of [insert new job title].
- Hyperlink information into your document - portfolios, news coverage, websites, .etc. This is such an easy way to save space and save the hiring manager/recruiter’s time (because they’ll be googling you anyway!).
- Publicly turn on the “open to opportunities” filter on LinkedIn (which puts a green filter around your profile picture). I’m guilty of advising job-seekers against this up until 3-4 years ago, but I have completely shifted my view on this. YES, turn on the green banner when you’re publicly looking for a role! NO, it is not desperate. This is such a strategic way to let your network and recruiters know you’re looking, and it has paid off for many of my clients!
