5 Ways to Design Your Office with Neurodiversity Top of Mind

Imagine working in an environment where you struggle to read the signage or where the sound feels deafening or where the lighting seems fine for everyone except you. For many employees who are neurodiverse and work in an office, this is what it's like every day. Here are 5 tips to make your workplace more inclusive for employees who are neurodiverse.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats

Today, organizations are under pressure to integrate a diverse workforce, encourage out-of-the-box thinking to gain a competitive edge, and deal with a worker’s market. Hiring neurodivergent workers could be an integral part of the solution to these circumstances. This article shows the reason why this is the case.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

Neurodiversity And The Workplace

A workplace made up of employees from different backgrounds, with a range of characteristics and life experiences, who all feel respected, included, valued and comfortable at work is what every employer should strive for. One characteristic that is often overlooked by employers is neurodiversity. So what is neurodiversity and how can employers create a neurodiversity-inclusive workplace?

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Why are people looking at my Linkedin profile? And then why don’t they reach out? Help!

We recently received a great question from a long-time reader about LinkedIn profile views from recruiters and hiring managers - what they mean and why they may not be followed by messages from the viewers or career opportunities. See the question and my answer below.

Reader Question: I see almost daily that recruiters, CEOs, and people in high positions are viewing my LinkedIn profile (usually 1st-level connections). However, I've never had anyone reach out asking me to apply for a job or for anything else. Why might people be looking at my profile? If they're looking because they have a role to fill, why might no one be contacting me when so many people are looking at my profile daily? I hear from friends in the corporate world all the time that people reach out via LinkedIn asking them to apply for jobs. Is this just not as common in Education?

Ana’s Answer:

My first reaction is, wow, it’s so cool that your profile is getting a lot of hits from influential visitors! My second is that I of course cannot provide an explanation for why people may or may not reach out to you after reviewing your profile if I don’t know who the folks are and what kind of roles they may be hiring for. Here’s how you can gain more insight for yourself:

  1. Leverage the free analytics that LinkedIn offers users. When you click on your profile and scroll down to your dashboard (the section right below your picture/name/headline/city), you should be able to learn more about who has viewed your profile and your search appearances.
  2. The search appearance data will be insightful - this will share a few keywords that people visiting your profile used to find you. Do those keywords reflect your current area of expertise, or are they more reflective of past jobs you’ve held (ie you’re currently a nonprofit fundraising leader but maybe a couple years ago you were a school operations manager)? If people are finding you by searching for keywords that may be part of your overall skillset, but perhaps no longer part of your daily work, then it may make sense that no one followed up with a message to connect or discuss open roles. If that’s the case, you may consider updating your LinkedIn profile to minimize your past work and really emphasize your current work/skills/professional interests.
  3. If the search appearance data isn’t insightful, you can always consider sending a direct message to the people who were visiting your profile if you’re interested in their organization or some casual networking. It might seem odd, but hey, they looked first! Here’s some sample language:

Hi John Troy,

I noticed you recently reviewed my profile, which inspired me to reach out. I’m a big fan of [insert their company name] and would love to connect. Would you be open to an informal conversation in the near future?

Cheers, [insert your name]

In my experience, recruiters are typically the only folks you can actually expect to reach out to you about job opportunities (unless it’s a very small organization). If CEOs and other execs are looking, it might just be that they saw your headline when you posted something on LinkedIn and were just a bit curious to learn more about you.

If you want to prepare for that rainy day, but are feeling overwhelmed, our team can help!
