Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

What can you negotiate besides salary?

Beyond offering salary transparency, more organizations are moving toward ensuring an equitable process when it comes to compensation, which includes not negotiating salary. Instead, many organizations will review internal salary equity (i.e. what their current staff earns and their qualifications), your years of experience, your location (especially for a remote role and the cost of living in your city), and any other credentials you might have before offering you a final number. Even if salary conversations are off the table, you can still negotiate many other aspects of an offer, including:

  • Professional Development Budget
  • Paid Time Off
  • Flexibility to work remotely or hybrid
  • Parking Spots
  • The job functions (i.e. if the job description says 60% of time on function X, but you ask to adjust it to 25% so you can spend more time on a different function)
  • Job Title (i.e. adjusting the “specialist” job title to “project lead”)
  • Work Schedule (i.e. which hours of the day, or days of the week you work)
  • Start Date

A best practice includes reaching out to other professionals in your industry to learn about common benefits within similar organizations, and make a list of the benefits you hope to receive in your next role.
