When Did We Become Disillusioned with Desegregation?

2024 marks 70 years since the Supreme Court’s 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education. According to leading scholars, however, the changes that followed the landmark desegregation case since have been anything but encouraging. So just what went wrong in the decades since 1954 to leave so many of today’s educators disillusioned?

What WorkTogether is reading right now.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

So you have an interview coming up…

  • Many of my clients are preparing for interviews this week (woohoo!). If you find yourself also preparing for an interview, here are some things you may want to clarify before engaging in the process:

    1. With whom will you be interviewing? One of my clients was recently surprised to be meeting with the Executive Director versus recruiter in a first round interview.
    2. What steps can you expect in a process? Will there be two interviews and a work sample, or 6 interviews, a full-day observation, 3 work samples, etc.?
    3. Are you clear on the salary range? Are you comfortable spending hours preparing for an interview without knowing?
    4. What is their ideal start date and does it align with your own timeline?

More often than not, these topics will be shared in a job description or in the communication you receive prior to your first interview. If any of them aren’t, and they are important to you, don’t fret! Simply ask (either via email, if that’s how you’re communicating) or in the existing phone call (if that is how you’ve been invited to interview). Here are some talking points:

    1. Thank you for inviting me to move forward, I’m looking forward to meeting your team.
    2. Can you clarify a few aspects of the process as I didn’t see them listed in the [job description/invitation email/careers page]? (sample questions to choose from/add to below)
      1. Who will I be interviewing with in this upcoming conversation?
      2. What are the steps/timeline of this process?
      3. When do you hope to onboard your hire?
      4. What is the budgeted salary range for this role?
    3. Thank you for taking the time to clarify. I look forward to hearing from you.
