Everboarding: A New Generation of Onboarding

Doing onboarding well is such a challenge, primarily because there’s so much information to share so quickly. What if organizations took a different approach and instead of onboarding, approach new employee orientation as…Everboarding? Read here to learn about this evolution.

The Benefits of an Onboarding Buddy

We believe that work is a team sport, and everyone needs a buddy! This article lays out the values of the buddy system, and gives guidance for how to set it up.

What WorkTogether is reading right now.

What Makes an Effective Onboarding Plan

We’re getting ready to onboard some new employees, and took a hard look at our (now, admittedly outdated), onboarding tools. This overview helped us prioritize what we need to adjust, get rid of and replace.

Negotiating your salary in your current role

Nervous about approaching salary conversations with your current boss? Here are some tips!

  1. Know your target salary. Instead of simply saying “I want more money,” come prepared with a desired % increase or range, and make sure to back it up with research (i.e. this is what is fair market value, I understand newer hires with my same title are earning this amount, etc.).
  2. Schedule a meeting with your boss. When you reach out, let them know it is your intention to discuss your compensation. This will allow them to prepare on their own, whether it’s to get insight from their own manager or the human resources team about what is within their power regarding salary increases.
  3. Advocate for yourself! Wanting more money is not compelling on its own. You must be prepared to make a case, if applicable, for how you’ve added value above and beyond the demands of your role. For example, your organization downsized and you took on significantly more work, while continuing to deliver results. Make a list with your many accomplishments and be prepared to share them! Not only will this boost your confidence, it can help your manager make a case with their leadership team/board/etc.
  4. Get clarity if the answer is NO. You might find out that there’s no budget, or perhaps your performance is not as stellar as you imagined. Regardless of the case, find out what it will take (performance and timeline) to reach your target salary, and commit to following up regarding your performance, budget, or set timeline.
  5. Make a game plan for how you can reach your salary elsewhere. Listen, you don’t have to find a new job if you’re otherwise happy in your current role, but if the organization is unwilling or unable to pay you more, you can explore additional opportunities. Unfortunately, having another job offer may be the one thing that motivates your current employer to pay you more. To me, this is one strategy to achieve your goal, but it’s the most time consuming and stressful. It can also help you realize there are even better roles out there that pay you more and support your short and long term goals!
