From ‘burnout blocking’ to ‘revenge quitting’: the buzzword predictions for HR in 2025

HR in 2025 is set to embrace a wave of new buzzwords reflecting broader workplace trends. Key terms include revenge quitting, where employees abruptly leave jobs due to burnout or lack of recognition, and corporate catfishing, where employers exaggerate job perks like flexibility. Other concepts like anti-perks reveal how some seemingly positive benefits can harm employee satisfaction, while reverse mentoring is predicted to grow as younger employees guide senior leaders on technology and generational values. The proactive approach of burnout blocking emphasizes preventing employee overwhelm through clear expectations, flexibility, and early intervention. Together, these terms signal a shift toward transparency, adaptability, and prioritizing employee well-being.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Do I need to be on LinkedIn in order to land a new job?

I lead training for education leaders about job searching, and I will inevitably always have a few session attendees ask if LinkedIn is a necessary part of a job search.

The answer is NO.

To be effective in a job search, you should prioritize writing a stellar resume and applying to positions for which you are very qualified, very quickly (first 48 - 72  hours, when possible!).

But investing just a bit of time on LinkedIn can also advance your opportunities, even when you’re not actively looking.

You do not need to post regularly (or at all!) to leverage LinkedIn. You do not need to have thousands of connections to leverage LinkedIn. You do not need to pay for a premium account to leverage LinkedIn either.

Instead, here are the basics:

- Complete the main profile sections, ensuring all work experience is included, with some content (could be a paragraph or bullets from your resume) explaining the role and your impact.

- Include a picture (does not have to be a professional headshot, but keep it professional looking).

- Write your own headline, following this formula: Job Title @ Employer Name OR Job Function and Industry | 3 top skills relevant to your work | One sentence sharing the problem you solve professionally (i.e. “I position mission-driven talent to land roles leading schools, school systems, and social impact organizations.”)

- Turn out “open to finding a new job” privately for recruiters, or publicly for anyone on LinkedIn to see (includes having a public, green filter around your profile picture which says “open to work”).

- Follow company pages for employers in your industry.

- If/When you send connection requests, include a 1-2 sentence personal note as to why you want to connect (LinkedIn now limits users with a free profile to 5 personal notes a month).

- Login to LinkedIn a couple times a month to review/respond to messages and invitation requests. If you are actively job-hunting, prioritize logging on more frequently.

- The majority of recruiters (specifically those who source for talent) use LinkedIn to find qualified talent. Ensuring you have an active and updated profile can support your current and future job searches.
