The Art of Coaching Emotions

When it comes to emotions at work, people usually fall into one of two camps: they suppress them or are overtaken by them. Both responses to emotions can lead to toxic cultures and fail to create environments where everyone is able to show up, be seen, and thrive.  Listen to this podcast episode on the art of coaching and apply emotions coaching to your team.

Blueprint for a Successful Job Search

A client recently asked me, “Ana, now that I’ve crafted my personal value proposition, and my resume, cover letter template, and Linkedin profile are complete, how can I most effectively spend my time job-seeking for optimal success? Is there a set number of job applications I must submit per week? Where do I start??”

While I can’t provide specific application goals, here’s my best advice for approaching your job search once your materials are up-to-date:

  1. Set realistic benchmarks (goals). If you only focus on the ultimate goal of landing a job, you might spend months feeling unsuccessful. Instead, set benchmarks that help you receive that coveted job offer. These could be around the hours you spend each week job searching, the number of connections you add on LinkedIn, number of employers you research, amount of job boards you visit, versions of your resume that you write, informational interviews you conduct, etc.
  2. Stay organized. Create folders on your desktop or google drive where you store your resume(s)/CV, previously written cover letters, and a list of roles you’ve already applied to (include the date of your application submission and where you stand in the process), previous technical activities you’ve completed, and relevant documents that are frequently requested in your interview processes (i.e. sample lesson plans or curriculum, project plans, agendas for meetings you’ve led, sales goals, fundraising event plans, etc.).
  3. Save the job descriptions anytime you apply to a role. I always recommend studying job descriptions before an interview, but once you’re far along in the process, you might find that the job description is no longer posted! Save it as a PDF or copy and paste the language into a document you can easily access during your prep work.
  4. Focus on quality, not quantity. A career coach I follow online often cautions job-seekers to avoid the “spray and pray approach” to applying (i.e. mass apply to numerous roles and hope the numbers are in your favor). Instead, identify target roles and employers - network with their recruiters and/or managers, lean on people who can refer you for openings, and tailor your resume and cover letters to those positions and employers.
  5. Step back and analyze how your job search is going. Are you constantly getting rejected after a phone screen or take-home activity? Are you getting rejected right after your application? Are there trends in who is reaching out to you and for what roles? The answers to these questions can inform your approach moving forward.
