In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will focus on professional career and leadership development for non-teaching professionals in education.
Learning and Development Strategies During COVID-19
Businesses around the world are quickly adapting to new working environments during the Coronavirus pandemic. Many companies pivoted to remote work to ensure business continuity while protecting workers from potential exposure. Conducting business-as-usual also means continuing to focus on employee development, not letting learning and development fall to the wayside. For businesses shifting to online remote work, now is the time to use technology for learning and development opportunities. Here are a few strategies to help you along the way.
Whatever industry you're in, there's bound to be one thing you can count on: change. Things never remain constant. Change is inevitable, but the important part is how you react to it. Want to continue to make yourself marketable, year after year? Keep an eye on what's happening in your industry and evolve along with it. Here are some ideas for keeping up with what's going on in your industry.
A recent study found workers who telecommuted are less likely to receive promotions, big raises, or satisfactory performance reviews than those who work in the office. The study found: Remote employees didn't have the same "passive face time" as their in-office colleagues, and leaders evaluated workers differently based on whether they were seen in the workplace. Remote employees can't fake productivity by sitting in a cubicle looking busy — and they may need to work a bit harder to make an impression with their bosses. Here is everything you need to know about your professional development while working remotely.
Developing a career that reflects our passions and provides opportunities to grow is the ultimate professional goal. Career development takes constant work, and when you work remotely, there are special considerations that you need to keep in mind. Here are seven keys to remote career development that address the unique challenges that remote professionals face.
When you're working in any environment, it can be challenging to keep your skills sharp when you are always delivering on deadlines. Sure, you could ignore professional development, but at some point, the pace of technological and industry change will outrun you, and you'll find yourself out of date and behind. Make it a focus to do something to enrich your knowledge each year. It'll pay dividends when you ask for a promotion or look for another opportunity! Here are a few tips to keep your skills sharp while working remotely.

You’ve heard it’s crucial to follow-up in the application process, but how and when?
First, it’s important to remember that hiring managers and recruiters have a lot on their plates right now. For the hiring manager, hiring might be one small aspect of a very dynamic role. They could be putting out multiple fires at once as they adjust to school/business closures. And for recruiters, while their full-time job is hiring, the current job landscape means that they might be receiving hundreds of applications for openings that might have received 20-30 applications just three months before. Recruiters may be responding to many inquiries, reviewing hundreds of applications a day, and meeting with hiring teams to re-evaluate timelines or check the existing candidate pool.
With that in mind, a professional follow-up that reiterates your interest and demonstrates empathy is an opportunity to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pool.
Following Up on your Application Template:
Dear Recruiter,
I hope you’re doing well during these challenging times.
I know timelines are dynamic given school/business closures, and thoroughly understand that processes may have changed. I’ve attached a copy of my resume in case it’s helpful.
Wishing you and your district all the best.
Take care, Your Name
Just as quickly as a follow-up can help, it can also hurt. I’ve received emails riddled with typos and emojis, phone calls demanding an update at that moment (versus inquiring as to when they can expect an update), or multiple emails/phone calls on the same day from the same person. Avoid this issue by approaching communication with hiring teams in the same way that you do a job application or interview - with care and professionalism.
