Family engagement is associated with positive academic and social outcomes for students. For family engagement to be truly effective and equitable, it must address systemic challenges in education. When school staff effectively engage families, they are more aware of the needs and strengths of students and their families, and can provide them with more appropriate social, emotional, and academic support.

How should I include consulting work on my resume?
|
|
|
Many of my clients either currently consult in addition to their full-time roles, or have launched independent consulting businesses at some point in their career. They often are unsure about how to represent this work on their resume and LinkedIn profile. Consulting work can either be included in chronological order in the main experience portion of a resume, or in a separate section for less relevant roles or consulting projects. Here is some guidance to help you decide how or if to include your consulting services on your resume and/or Linkedin profile:
When to include your consulting work in the main experience section of your resume:
- If you’ve been job-searching for a while and are not currently employed in a full-time position, consider listing your consulting work as your current role, whether or not you have active projects - this can minimize employer biases against “work gaps.”
- If your consulting work is where you’ve gotten the most experience using the kind of technology and/or completing projects most aligned to your target roles, move your consulting work to the main experience section of your resume.
When to include your consulting work in a separate section of your resume:
- If your consulting work is not particularly aligned to the kind of full-time roles you seek, for example you are an Instructional Leader, but are a wedding planning consultant in your spare time, I would recommend including the consulting work in a different section of your resume.
- If you are aiming for a very senior leadership position, and already have very aligned existing experience (i.e. you’re the executive director of a well-known organization, applying to serve as an executive director of a peer organization), consider moving even relevant consulting experience to a separate section of your resume so that no one questions your capacity to take on a very significant leadership role (even if that has never been an issues for you in the past), and so that hiring teams can stay most focused on your relevant leadership position versus a few niche projects you may have performed over the years.
In general, refrain from describing yourself as the “CEO” of your independent consulting business, especially if you are working solo. Instead, specify the kind of consulting services you provide, like “Education Strategy and Implementation Consultant.”
