Mental health is the topic of the moment in education, and rightly so. Since the pandemic lockdowns, students of all ages are struggling to snap back to the previous "normality." Luckily, technology has been able to not only help reduce mental health stigma, but also steps up to support, coach and connect young people with its many self-help applications.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Is longevity with the same employer considered a bad thing (in a job search)?

A client of mine has been with the same organization for nearly a decade, moving from a manager-level position to the C-suite. In that time, they’ve helped their organization scale and successfully navigate some incredibly dynamic situations. Despite their incredible impact over time, the client is concerned that if they engage in an external job search, other employers will look down upon their entire leadership experience existing within the same organization. Specifically, this client fears other employers will be underwhelmed by a candidate who has only done this kind of work within one organization. Though we hear a lot about “job-hoppers,” let’s talk about best practices for engaging in a job search when you’ve worked at the same institution for 10+ years (and maybe your whole career!).
- Even if you’ve worked in the same place for many years, with many of your colleagues becoming your closest friends, you are not your employer. As such, be aware of the way you use the term “our” on your resume and in interview answers. This is a subtle language choice I see far too often on the resumes and in interview answers of those who have worked at the same institution for a long time. An interviewer may wonder about your true interest in leaving your current employer, or capacity for learning new modes of operating.
- Make sure your resume and interview answers tell the story of your impact. Share proof points (data) of the problems you’ve solved over the years, with specific context when applicable (the scope of the problem, the size of the team, the $$$ you managed, etc.). This is the most compelling and explicit way to communicate your ability to solve problems, and give the hiring team a taste of how you can add value by joining their team.
- Demonstrate how your responsibilities or scope of work has grown over the course of your tenure. Even if your job title hasn’t changed, show how you’ve taken on new work streams or initiatives you’ve started or led.
- If you have experience working with external partners, through a consulting engagement, a coalition, or a funder, reference those partners in your resume bullets (name them directly, when possible). This is a strategic way to convey that you have experience with different operating styles and context, even if you’ve worked at the same organization for many years. Additionally, consider including volunteer work on your resume (at a school, food bank, a religious institution, medical clinic, etc.). Similarly, if you have earlier experience with a different employer that you originally omitted from your resume (because it was older, a college internship, etc.), consider including that information in your document.
