Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Can accepting a job at a lesser known organization pose long-term career risks?

In every industry, there are employers that just seem cooler than others. Their brand recognition is high, they might be known for a highly selective hiring process, or everyone who works there just seems impressive. What I might define as a “cool” employer might be different than what you might define as a “cool” employer, but after years as a recruiter and career coach I can say there are definitely organizations that my clients consistently put at the top of their “dream organization” list. And I also coach clients who currently work for those same organizations…and the grass is not always greener on the other side.

No employer is perfect! You might be delighted in your role, on your team, and with your employer. One of your colleagues might be miserable in that same environment. There is no single job or employer that is everyone’s cup of tea!

But what happens when you work for a name-brand organization and are considering making a move that may look like “a step down”? Are there long-term risks you should consider?

My answer is no, as long as you are strategic in your framing.

For example, if a potential employer inquires as to why you’re choosing to leave your current org, or why you left it in the past, be prepared to share rationale that speaks to your target work environment (and you can throw in your strengths too). For example:

  • My current organization is still in start-up mode, and I realize I’m eager to be somewhere with a strong foundation, a veteran team, and existing systems in place that I can run with and build upon.
  • My current organization is remote, and I miss the camaraderie that comes with working on-the ground, with an in-person team.
  • My current organization has strong partnerships in the charter world, but I realize I’m most energized by the prospect of supporting traditional public school districts.

There is not one singular trajectory for social impact talent, and you shouldn’t feel locked into working at a popular organization if you’re unhappy. Crafting a narrative to provide context around your decision will build your confidence and compel others.
