“I just saw a great role posted and the job description says they’ll close the application on [insert date]. It’s a few weeks away - is it ok to wait until the deadline to submit?”
My clients often breathe a sigh of relief when they realize they might have several weeks to apply for a role, but are curious about the potential drawbacks of waiting. If an application deadline/application closing date is listed, does it matter when you apply?
Posting an application date is a strategic move for an employer. They are simultaneously creating urgency (“oh no! I need to get my app in before it closes!”) which could position them to fill the role quickly, and transparency for candidates. Win win!
Closing a position on a certain date doesn’t mean an employer is waiting until that date to review applications. They are likely reviewing applications and scheduling interviews on a rolling basis (unless they explicitly state otherwise). And just because a deadline is listed on an application doesn’t mean the date won’t change. An employer may also remove a position prematurely if they’ve already received strong interest and feel confident in their ability to hire based on the current pool.
There are many reasons to wait to submit an application - perhaps you just saw the role posted and it’s the day before the deadline, you simply don’t have time to apply during a busy work week, or you’re still gathering relevant materials for the submission. If these reasons apply to you, don’t panic! BUT, if you’ve been putting off applying before a deadline because you just don’t think it matters, reconsider. By waiting to apply, you could be adding your name to a very large pool of strong applicants who have already begun interviewing. In this case, the early bird could get the worm.
