The Best and Worst Time of Year to Look for a Job

Job hunting sometimes seems like a never-ending process. While you may not have control over the time of year you need to find a job, certain seasons are better than others when it comes to getting hired.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Should I apply to a role I’m not interested in as a way to get face time with a hiring manager at my dream employer?

Imagine there’s an organization that you’ve been following for some time. You’d love to work there, but they never seem to post a role that matches your skills and interests. Should you apply for random positions that you are qualified for, but absolutely not interested in actually pursuing, as a way to get face time with hiring managers?

Applying for roles takes time - yours and that of recruiters, staff, and leadership. If your goal is to build a relationship with influential people at your target employer, in hopes that you’ll be top of mind when they do hire for your perfect role, there are more strategic ways to get yourself on their radar. Check out my tips (these are not in any particular order):

  • Connect with the head of HR or the hiring manager for your target team on LinkedIn and inquire if they’re open to informational meetings to share more about their organization.
  • Check out their career page and verify whether or not they regularly collect resumes for future roles. Recruiters will periodically review these submissions and cultivate compelling candidates for positions that are posted or will soon be posted.
  • Ask your network if they are connected to anyone in talent or on the correct functional team at your target organization. Perhaps they can make introductions as part of your informational meeting strategy.
  • Seek out these organizations at conferences you’re also attending. Perhaps their team is speaking in a workshop, and you can introduce yourself after the session, or a tabling event if applicable.
  • Follow their company page on social media (examples include LinkedIn, X/Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook). Many organizations post information about openings on social media, including upcoming hiring events, information sessions, and hiring manager contact information.

Applying for roles you’re not actually interested in actually accepting can burn bridges. Instead, focus on informational interviews and networking opportunities.
