Ready to ace your next interview? This week, we're equipping you with preparation strategies, thoughtful questions to ask employers, and insights on why your human skills matter more than ever in today's AI-influenced hiring process.
When interviewers ask for your questions, they're evaluating your preparedness and genuine interest. Come ready with four to six thoughtful questions about organizational health, culture, role priorities, manager style, development, and compensation. Pro tip: write out your ideal responses beforehand! Knowing what you're listening for helps you evaluate answers and ask meaningful follow-ups that show strategic thinking.
AI is changing how applications are processed, but human connection still wins jobs! While AI can help with prep, employers increasingly seek adaptability, creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. These skills can't be automated. Interviews are your chance to stand out through authenticity and genuine connection, proving you bring irreplaceable value beyond algorithms.

What We’re Writing Right Now
Standing out in interviews goes beyond basic prep. It requires solid preparation and genuine presence. Show up on time, stay fully engaged, and remain authentic and confident throughout. Use the STAR method to structure thoughtful responses. Remember, interviews are conversations, not interrogations. Approach them professionally and authentically to make a lasting impression.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Setting yourself up for success during interviews
Interviews can feel so high stakes. And for many who are interviewing for jobs, they really are. Know that your interviewer wants you to succeed. Their job is to find and hire the strongest candidate, and they’re hoping it will be you. They are rooting for you, I swear! I certainly was every time I interviewed a candidate.
Beyond arriving early (either virtually or in-person), and prepared (i.e. you have the latest version of zoom, your computer doesn’t need to do any updates, you practiced and have access to relevant documents, etc), here are some other things that can set you up for success:
- Bring a notebook! Jot down some headlines of stories/examples you want to remember to share so that if you feel overwhelmed in the morning it can quickly jog your memory. You might even write “STAR” at the top of the page to remind yourself to answer in that format. You can also prepare your questions in advance and record them here, which you will then reference at the end of the interview.
- Remember, humility will not get you hired. By that, I mean this is not the time to be subtle about your accomplishments or vague. In fact, your interviewer is specifically looking to understand the impact you’ve had, your approach to hard work, and the strategies you’ve used successfully. Don’t take credit for work you didn’t do, but when work is collective (as it usually is!), specify the role you played in achieving those results (i.e. you oversaw the team, planned the launch, coached the new members, designed the layout, etc.). Be humble in how you discuss colleagues or respond to probes by the interviewers (i.e. if they ask more details, don’t get defensive - thank them for their question and then respond). And, don’t be afraid to share growth moments, too!
- Don’t forget to breathe and pause. If you’re worried about taking process time when questions are asked, simply say: “That’s a great question. May I take a moment to collect my thoughts?”
- Leverage non-verbal ways to demonstrate engagement and interest. If you’re comfortable, make regular eye contact. If eye contact is outside of your comfort zone, focus on the forehead or nose, or show engagement by nodding your head and sitting with strong posture if this is physically doable.
As I’ve shared in previous articles, I’ve interviewed so many people. Most people come prepared, professional, and engaged. That being said, once a candidate asked me how much money I made and another time a candidate asked my co-interviewer about her recent wedding (because she’d found pictures of it online, not because the interviewer brought it up). I would say…don’t do that!
