Ready for executive leadership? Two things matter: building the right skills and proving you have them. While board service develops strategic thinking and judgment, you still need to showcase these capabilities in interviews. Master these five leadership-level questions about decision-making, stakeholder conflicts, company knowledge, and your first 90 days to demonstrate executive readiness.

Leadership development is intentional work! And, it looks different than good management. From leading yourself first to focusing on outcomes over outputs, these seven strategies separate next-level leaders from the rest. Self-awareness, strategic vision, trust-building, risk tolerance, and delegation aren't just buzzwords - they're competencies that require intentional development and practice.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
|
|
|
“I know I’m supposed to network during my job-search, but it feels so transactional to reach out to people outside of my closest circle and ask for help. How can I approach networking in a way that doesn’t feel so superficial?”
I tackle this question often in my work with clients, in trainings, and in this Career Corner. I always flip the situation: How would you feel if someone - whether you knew them well at one point in your life or they’re a friend of a friend of a friend - reached out to you in ernest with a requisition for your support? If they shared with you, “hey, I’m embarking on a job search for the first time in a few years and am reaching out to those in my network to learn what I don’t know, make valuable connections, and hopefully accelerate an otherwise long process? I really value your insight and would be grateful for a bit of your time.” Would you think they were superficial or transactional, or would you feel honored they came to you for help? Answering that question for themselves typically helps my clients reframe how they think about networking and take away the fear they have about approaching others.
Other pro-tips:
- Be strategic in who you contact - consider folks who work in your desired industry, for your target employer, in your target region, or who have career-seeking advice that could be helpful.
- When you reach out, share why you’ve contacted them so people know exactly the kind of support you are seeking. If you keep it to open-ended, people feel less invested in supporting you because they truly don’t know how.
- Give people an out - make it easy for them to decline without any hard feelings (i.e. “I understand this may be a busy time for you - no pressure if this isn’t a good time.)
- Show gratitude by verbalizing your take-aways from your conversation or correspondence - actions you took as a result of their help, or valuable insights gained.
