Jobseekers and clients regularly reach out to me with questions about their job-search. Here’s a recent question:
“I am networking a lot, with the right people, but the roles they send me are totally misaligned. Is networking still a good use of time?”
Read on for my response:
Networking for the sake of networking is not strategic all on its own. People want to help, but in the absence of clarity or clear asks on your part, they’ll likely project their own assumptions or goals into the ways they support you. An effective approach to network includes the following:
- Know your goals for networking - it’s not the job of the people you connect with to figure out what you want out of your conversation with them! They will likely figure wrong.
- Create a list of people, or the kinds of people, who can help you achieve your goals - whether the goal is to learn about a job function, an industry, a specific employer, job openings in your desired function and industry, etc. Even if you’re not sure who can help you achieve your goal, you can always connect with people and ask if they’re aware of people who fit that profile.
- Practice introducing yourself with a very short personal value proposition. What are the big problems you solve at work (I’m passionate about coaching school leaders in the areas of turnaround strategy and team-culture-building), and where have you solved those problems in the past? Adjust this format if you’re interested in a career pivot, to share the problems you’ve solved in the past, where you’ve solved them, and the kind of work you’re targeting in your next role and why.
- Drive the conversation, but then spend the majority of your time listening and asking follow-up questions. This can be as easy as stating why you are excited to connect with them and the big things you hope to learn from your conversation.
- Paraphrase your take-aways from the conversation (this is such an easy way to show someone you really valued their insight and their time, and that you learned something new) and share any next steps you plan to take as a result of your conversation. If they offer to provide additional support, get very specific with your asks - the kind of roles you hope they’ll pass along your way (with sample job titles or job functionality) or people you hope they can introduce you to in the near future.
Just like in other areas of your job search, specificity and reflection are both key. If you find that people continue to send you misaligned opportunities or information, take the time to reflect on what you shared in conversations and how you can better communicate your goals and experience.
