Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Who should I include as references and how can I set them up for success?
As a recruiter, I’ve seen references play a major role in providing context about a candidate and validating the strengths that interviewers observed in a hiring process. References can feel like an afterthought given the amount of time one spends applying to and interviewing for jobs, but who you include and how you prep them matters. Here are some tips:
- Ideally, include current or recent managers. A manager who has observed you in action and evaluated your performance is strategic. Unable to provide your current manager because you haven’t shared you’re looking for a new role? No problem. Instead, include a colleague you trust to be discreet, along with a recent manager from past employment.
- Do not include personal references, unless asked (for example, I’ve been a personal reference for people interviewing for roles in the federal government). I’ve shared this story in a past career corner, but once I called a reference only to find out that he was the candidate’s parents’ friend. When I probed him for feedback about the candidate, he answered: “he was a very nice baby.” Yikes!
- If you are including someone on your reference list, let them know! If you’re applying to many roles, it can be helpful to send them an email and let them know about your progress in different processes. Share the employer and the role, and why you’re so excited about the position. As someone who has conducted many reference checks, it’s always nice to hear from the reference that they were expecting my call and that the candidate has been telling them how excited they are about the role.
In my experience, your network wants you to succeed and will be happy to serve as a reference. Let them know why you’ve included them as a reference and how much you value their support. You might be in the position to provide the same support in the future!
