Note from our Founder

Most organizations improve their systems only after something goes wrong. A process breaks down. A key employee leaves. Communication falters. A deadline is missed. The need for change becomes obvious.

But one of the things I've observed working with education organizations across the country is that the strongest teams rarely wait for a problem before they improve. They use quieter moments to strengthen the systems that are already working.

That's easier said than done. When things are running smoothly, it's tempting to move on to the next priority. Yet those are often the best times to ask a few simple questions.

What's working well enough that we should protect it? What's creating unnecessary friction? What small improvement today could prevent a much larger challenge tomorrow? Meaningful progress rarely comes from one sweeping change. More often, it's the result of small improvements made consistently over time. The organizations that continue to grow aren't always the ones that react the fastest. They're often the ones that improve before they have to.

Together,

John

P.S. The same principle applies to your career. You don't have to be unhappy in your current role to think about what's next. The best career moves often begin long before you decide it's time to make one.

The New Rules of Networking: 5 Surprising Strategies That Move Your Career Forward

Traditional networking may be the biggest myth still shaping careers. After a multiyear experiment attending everything from private Slack communities to secretive dinner clubs, this writer found the strongest professional relationships form in smaller, purpose-driven spaces where nobody leads with their title. Her advice if you can’t find that kind of community: start one.

Job-searching out loud

Some of my clients are feeling stuck in their job-searching strategy. They are researching potential employers, tailoring their application materials, and applying to roles (for which they are highly qualified!) quickly, but aren’t moving beyond the application stage. What more can they do? Job-search out loud.

Think of job-searching out loud as a strategy to accompany networking. When you’re job searching, make sure people in your life - from friends and family to the people you regularly see at the dog park, gym, school drop off, coffee shop, church, etc - know you’re looking too! While this can feel uncomfortable, you never know who might be able to connect you to your future job via job listings, introductions, advice, or more!

When someone asks how things are going, avoid the “fine, and you?” comment we are so programmed to make and instead share that you’re job-seeking and encountering a particularly tough market. While you might get well-meaning but unhelpful advice, you may also get emotional support, connections, leads, or more. My clients continue to tell me the power of networks in their successful job-seeking, and by inviting more folks into your job-searching journey you may find what’s been missing in your strategy.
