Self-Awareness: Characteristics of Effective Leadership

One of the most important characteristics of effective leadership is also one of the easiest to overlook: self-awareness. Self-awareness is important not only from an individual perspective but also from a collective perspective. In order to create a cohesive and effective team, it's crucial that each member has a good understanding of themselves as well as how they interact with other people.

Leveraging LinkedIn Contacts in the Job Search

Every week, we receive questions from clients and jobseekers about job search trends and how to approach different job search situations. Here is a recent question from a jobseeker and Ana’s answer:

“What’s the best way to reach out to a LinkedIn connection when you want them to flag your application for someone they know?”

Referrals can be a strategic way to get your application noticed by hiring teams, though I’d encourage you to reach out to people you actually know versus asking a stranger you happen to be connected with on LinkedIn to flag your application. Someone who actually knows you and can speak to your strengths is the kind of referral best positioned to make sure your application is noticed. If you do have this kind of connection at a target company, here’s some sample language:

“Hi [insert name]. I hope you’re doing well! I recently submitted an application for [insert position name and job id if you have it] at your organization, [insert employer name]. I’m incredibly interested in this role and see so much alignment between my experience, values, and the needs of this position. If you’re open to it, I would greatly appreciate you flagging my name for the recruiter or hiring manager. I’m happy to send you my resume in case it’s helpful. I want you to know how much I appreciate you considering this request.”
