Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

My resume tells the story of a job-hopper, but I just want to plant roots. How do I ensure job-hopping isn’t the headline with potential employers?

I recently met with a client who has moved employers/cities every 1-2 years for the last five years, but they are much more interested in staying and growing somewhere over time. They are wondering how to frame their past movement and their goals with hiring teams. Here are some recommendations:
- Instead of focusing on all the moves right away, instead share the problems you solve for an employer (i.e. “I turn-around low-performing campuses” or “I develop comprehensive communication strategies for districts seeking to overhaul their brand.” THAT is the headline, not every role you’ve ever had.
- Next, share the benefits of having moved - the context you bring having worked across regions and/or types of employers, the ability to learn and adapt quickly.
- Emphasize that at this point in your career, you are eager to plant roots and grow. Share your own reflections about the environment you seek and the work you are most excited to perform and how that aligns closely with this particular employer. If you feel comfortable, you can name the elephant in the room: “You may notice I’ve moved frequently over the last few years as I’ve progressed in my leadership. At this point in my career, I’m eager to plant roots and do so in a place that [share what you are looking for].”
Moving roles/employers is VERY common these days, so know that employers have a more open mind as they are hiring talent. Framing your story in a way that shows how your varied experience is a value-add to this employer can be incredibly strategic as you interview for new roles.
