When to Start Your Job Search

I often have jobseekers reach out to me with questions around how far in advance they should start job searching - a year, 6 months, a week? This answer likely depends on the kind of role you’re targeting. Here’s how to approach creating a timeline:

  • Determine if you need a new job right away or you have the luxury of time (say you are campus-based and want to end the school year first, or you’re relocating with a partner who will be starting a graduate program in 9 months).

  • Determine if there’s a specific hiring deadline or time of year for postings in your desired role/industry. Outside of a few specific roles (i.e. fellowship programs, school-based positions, entry-level banking or consulting jobs), employers typically post jobs when they have an opening and want to fill that opening as soon as possible.

  • If you determine that your desired role does have a specific application deadline or hiring season, use that clarity to your advantage! If it’s helpful, put reminders in your calendar for when you should work on your application, update your resume/write a cover letter, and take note of any specific requirements that you should also be aware of and can be working towards obtaining (i.e. a special certification, recommendation letters, an entrance exam, a transcript, etc.). Connect with employers and recruiters in advance to build a relationship and learn more prior to applying.

  • Even if you don’t plan on starting a new job for more than 6 months, keep an eye out for roles that are a good match for your skills and interests. You can reach out to the hiring manager to ask if they’re flexible on start date or if they plan to hire for similar positions at a later date. I’ve seen clients have great success with this strategy, ultimately becoming part of a short list of candidates that a hiring manager reaches out to even before they post future positions.

Approaching your job search in a strategic way can make a sometimes nebulous process much more straightforward and manageable. Start conducting research on timelines and backwards plan.
