Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
Where do I find job postings?
|
|
|
One of the most mysterious aspects of landing a new job is knowing where to find them. Not all recruiting budgets or strategies are created equally, therefore, organizations employ various approaches to posting openings. Unless you have 1-3 target employers and you’re frequently scanning their career pages, looking for aligned job postings takes some work.
Organizations with robust recruiting budgets will likely post in multiple places, including their website, a variety of job boards (industry specific, executive search firms, general job boards), social media sites, and in-person/virtual job-fairs. Organizations with smaller budgets will likely limit their postings to their website, and social media (and websites like indeed, which aggregate jobs from other job boards, may post the roles too, but not within the first pages of a search).
Here are some strategies for finding job postings:
- Create a list of target job titles you can easily reference before you start searching. For example, a seasoned nonprofit professional skilled in Talent and Strategy might search for “Chief of Staff” or “Director of Talent Initiatives” or “Special Project Director” or “Vice President of Human Resources” or “Director of People Operations” and so much more!
- Draft a list of target employers and follow them on LinkedIn, sign up for career notifications on their website (if they have that feature available), and check out their website career pages.
- Visit TrulyHired, WorkTogether Talent Consulting’s FREE education job board!
- Compile a list of search firms specializing in your target industry, like WorkTogether Talent Consulting, and visit their websites - you may uncover roles not yet posted on company websites (with employer names removed).
- Visit your social media sites of choice and search for hashtags like #edtechjobs or #hiring and #education.
- Check out sites like Indeed, but know that you’ll likely be scrolling for a while before finding aligned positions (because of the nature of how the website functions - sponsored jobs and aggregating other job boards).
- Connect with recruiters and/or hiring managers at your target employers and simply ask if they are currently hiring for or planning to hire for your job function (get as specific as possible - instead of “are you hiring for anything right now?” try, “are you hiring for any people operations/talent development roles now or in the near future?”).
- Ask your network - are they aware of current roles aligned to your skills/interests, or anticipate openings in the near future?
