Why Remote Work Is Inclusion Work
In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will focus on D&I efforts, research, outcomes, interventions, stories, and best practices for non-teaching professionals in education.
Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace
By nature, remote organizations aren't limited by location, which, of course, logistically grants access to talent worldwide. Often, this means teams have a higher chance of being made up of people with various backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences. Remote jobs may provide opportunities and access to diverse groups of people, but that will only translate to the actual makeup of companies who actively pursue changes in their recruiting, messaging, and HR initiatives. This article will discuss how organizations can embrace diversity within their teams while working remotely.
Remote work can bring significant benefits to an organization by allowing it to look beyond its headquarters to attract top talent. Organizations open to remote employment experience access to a larger talent pool, lower overhead costs, and improved productivity. However, remote employees are also a workforce that often faces a unique set of challenges in the workplace, leading them to feel shunned and left out. To retain remote talent, employees who telework need to be considered in your diversity and inclusion initiatives. Here are six tips for creating a more inclusive environment for remote employees.
Diversity is a value you will find in many organization's mission and policy statements. It includes aspects of equal opportunity as well as commitments to inclusive behavior. Most employers have long since realized the benefits that a diverse workforce brings to the success of their organization — alongside the remote working policies which have a complex and intriguing relationship to this area of leadership practice. This article will discuss the movement and benefits of moving to a more inclusive team-centered work environment.
Creating and nurturing a remote culture is key to inclusion. Inclusion can make your organization more resilient by increasing the diverse inputs and perspectives of a team, allowing them to create better, more high-quality products. Remote work is seen as inclusion work that, when employed by organizations at scale, could drastically shift the economy and employee wellness across the country. This article will explore the connection between remote culture, inclusion, and human performance.
Don't cancel your D&I events just because COVID-19 has caused your organization to move to a virtual work environment. Just because the company is not all in one location does not mean all your hard work in planning events has gone to waste. Your organization is not all in one location; it does not mean all your hard work has gone to waste. Now is a great time to have your co-workers enhance more familiar with remote practices, and in the long term, you can help your organization become more inclusive as a result. Here are a few tips for making your virtual D&I event successful.

Recently, a few of my clients have shared with me that they’re hoping to find a work-from-home position, but not sure where to start and/or concerned it’s not a realistic option. First of all, YES, remote positions in the broad Education landscape exist (both before, during, and eventually post-COVID 19)! Second, here are some things to consider before writing off the ability to work from home in Education:
1. You can easily search for Remote positions on TrulyHired! Other big job boards (think LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.) also allow you to search for remote positions, but you will have to dig deeper to find ED-specific roles.
2. If you find a local job posting you love, but it’s unclear if the employer will allow you to work from home, apply anyways! Your primary work location, just like salary, professional development budget, vacation days, etc. can be negotiated. If offered a position, you can ask if they’re open to you working remotely (even if it involves coming to the office once a week and working from home the rest of the time). I believe you’ll find that employers are more flexible in a COVID-19 world. Be prepared to make a case for how you’ve been successful in prior work-from-home environments, or what you’ll do to ensure you’re able to foster strong relationships with your new team.
3. Is there an organization you love, but they’re not local and they don’t have remote positions listed? It never hurts to reach out and professionally inquire if they’d be open to remote talent.
4. Talk to your current employer! Several of my clients have recently relocated as a result of COVID 19 (to be closer to family, or for other reasons), and their current employers (including school districts), have been open to them working remotely either permanently or in a consulting capacity. Talk to your current manager and see if this might be an option for you and be sure to lay out a case for how you can continue adding value in your current role or in a new capacity. One of my current clients, a teacher, will be flexing her strategy and Instructional Leadership skills to re-write English curriculum and a new testing schedule for her entire district (from another state!). Another client, who has experience in Operations Leadership, will be creating new contingency plans for her former district in a consulting capacity.

WorkMonger Team Recommendation
Why Does Diversity Matter?
Diversity is a critical issue for organizations. At its best, diversity is a business strategy that has been shown to increase an organization’s ability to achieve better bottom-line performance and sustain its growth and prosperity. It’s most effective when it’s focused on increasing opportunity for personal and organizational achievement – not on inaccurate beliefs about legalities, obligations and rules.
