Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

For many American parents and educators alike, August is back to school time. That means September could be a great month for some “housekeeping” with your current or future job search. Here are some ideas of ways you can get your ducks in a row, whether or not you’re actively applying for roles.
- Create or update your LinkedIn profile. I chatted with a friend this morning who hadn’t updated her LinkedIn profile in more than 10 years (my career coach heart sank!)! No new jobs were listed, not to mention outdated location and work responsibilities. SUCH a missed opportunity for being found by recruiters for aligned roles.
- Dust off your resume. Add your most recent work experience and measurable outcomes. Delete the old objective statement (if you still have one) and replace it with a short executive summary and list of career highlights. While you’re at it, delete your street address too (city and state is fine).
Collect and save job-specific artifacts. Applications and interview processes sometimes require examples of previous work - start gathering your exemplary work products (that are safe to share externally!) now. For a teacher, this could be lesson or unit plans and for a senior leader this could be agendas, meeting decks, or strategic plans.
Create a centralized location for your job-search documents on your desktop, hard drive, or google drive (or wherever you save important digital files). Save previous cover letters, personal statements, bios, resume versions, performance tasks, etc. Consider dividing the documents by work function (i.e. professional learning roles) if you’ve applied to a few different kinds of jobs.
Read a few job descriptions. Even if you’re not actively applying, language in job descriptions can provide a road map for skills you need to gain or flex and language you should use in your job-search materials.
- Create a separate section on your resume for volunteer work. If the amount of work you’ve done for a campaign, cause, or party is substantial (i.e. over a period of weeks or months, not just once or twice), include it here!
- Define and quantify your political volunteer work. For example, a phone banker could share the number of calls made or number of other volunteers they recruited and trained. A canvasser could share the number of doors they knocked on and literature they distributed. A fundraiser could share the actions they took and the amount of dollars raised.
- Before listing the name of a candidate or party you’re supporting on your resume, consider the risk/reward and your audience. If you are applying for a think tank with a nonpartisan ethos, a state agency that must be bipartisan, an organization that is primarily funded through a funder with a political bent, consider that as well. We often urge our applicants to check out funding sources or partnerships as part of their interview prep and research. If you’re unsure, you can simply refer to your work with “a political campaign” instead of naming a candidate directly. If your volunteer work is in support of a particularly sensitive or relevant local topic, but of incredible personal value to you that you'd want your employer to know about or be in support of, including it in your resume is one clear way to communicate that.
