Building Trust at Work

The pandemic has undoubtedly provided leaders a unique opportunity to redefine the culture and practices of their organizations to better equip them for how work and our world have changed. That being said, numerous surveys have found a wide gap between executives’ expectations for workers to return to offices and their employees’ own desires. How can leaders bridge this gap and best utilize the opportunity presented to them?

Reasons to consider applying for new roles even if you like your boss, team, are compensated fairly, etc.

Usually, jobseekers approach me when they’re unhappy about one or more aspects of their current role. Outside of logistical reasons (i.e. needing to relocate, needing a different work schedule), perhaps they don’t feel valued by their manager or colleagues, or feel they are unfairly compensated for the work they do. Maybe they’re tired of being passed up for promotions year after year. But what if you love your manager/colleagues, feel fairly compensated, and have a good work schedule? Here are some reasons to consider new roles:

  1. You want to pivot to a new job function (or industry), and there’s no room for that kind of movement with your current employer.
  2. You seek to gain experience working in a different context (i.e. moving from a public charter school to a traditional public school, or from a non-profit organization to a for-profit employer).
  3. You seek greater compensation in the long-term, and though you’re fairly compensated now, there is more room for growth elsewhere.
  4. You seek benefits that better align with your needs and those of your dependents (i.e. a specific medical insurance plan), on-site child care, PTO days, etc.
  5. You seek a new mentor or manager with a career journey you can learn from.

When you see a lot of people in your network transitioning jobs, it makes sense to wonder if you should be looking as well. If you’re happy at work - with your team, the growth opportunities, the rigor, the total compensation package - be strategic about looking elsewhere. The grass is not necessarily greener on the other side! Take the time to reflect on your current and long-term goals, any unmet needs, and if you must pursue something new to meet those needs and goals.
