What’s the difference between a CV and resume?
A client of mine reached out recently to seek clarity on the difference between a resume and CV. Here’s the answer I shared with them:
Sometimes, people use the terms interchangeably, but they're two different documents. A CV, short for Curriculum Vitae, is almost exclusively used when applying for Academic/Research positions. Think a professor applying to a university, a medical student applying to residency, a scientist applying to a job, etc. These are long documents - 6-12 pages - which emphasize research/presentations/grants/publications. It is a comprehensive presentation of your entire work/research/scholarly experience, so it's quite long, especially for those with PhDs and other doctoral degrees.
A resume is typically 1-2 pages (for the executives/superintendents I coach, they're more like 3-4 pages, depending on years of experience and context), and it's a more concise picture of your career, with a focus on your job titles and impact within each role. Presentations, research, and publications are mentioned, but not given a ton of real estate. This is what most professionals use when applying to roles in the nonprofit and corporate sectors.
If you have been working in the Higher Ed world for the last few years and only have a CV, but are now applying to roles in school systems or nonprofits, I would strongly recommend you create a 1-2 page resume prior to sending a long document that the hiring manager is less familiar with reading. The same is true if you are now pivoting to higher ED - don’t send a resume when your competition is sending 6+ page documents detailing all their academic, scholarly, and professional successes.
