Building A Cross-functional Team in 2022: 9 Tips and Benefits

A cross-functional team is a permanent or temporary group of people with different types of experience working together to achieve a common goal. Cross-functional teams benefit companies because when team members with multiple skill sets work together, they can pursue company goals more efficiently. This article explains what a cross-functional team

is and provides tips for how to build one.

Organizational Structure: Your Guide to Configuring and Growing Teams

Choosing the right structure for your team requires you to think about how your team currently works and where you’re going. Before you draw up that org chart or start proposing new headcount, read on. In this article, the author will dig into the various types of organizational structures, what they are, and ways to implement them.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

What Does Placing People First Look Like?

In an effort to build effective teams, leaders often unintentionally overlook the personal, human-dimension of cohesion; we see team members for the value they bring to the team and fail to simply see them as human beings who have worth no matter what. So, to build effective teams of committed people that last, leaders need to start with a people-first mentality and fully understand what team cohesion actually is.

How does WorkMonger support JobSeekers?

In the last couple of weeks, a few Career Corner readers have reached out to request insight into how WorkMonger supports jobseekers - from our robust job board, TrulyHired, to what happens after you build a JobSeeker Profile, and what you can expect when working with our Talent Services team. We’ve invited Vinh, Manager of Talent Service, to write about what you can expect as a JobSeeker, along with tips for increasing your chances for matching with one of our employer partners!

WorkMonger’s mission is to bring lasting systemic change to the education sector by revolutionizing the way education organizations and professionals connect for meaningful non-teaching jobs. By harnessing the power of data and technology, WorkMonger was created to break down the barriers that separate great organizations and great people. Through the use of our robust jobseeker created profiles, our goal is to connect our employer partners with the best talents possible for their job.

There is so much going on behind the scenes here once a jobseeker finished building a profile with WorkMonger. Once a new role comes in, we run our algorithm to find the best matches for the role using the information jobseekers provided in their WorkMonger profile. For example, if we are supporting an employer to hire a school principal, candidates who include both instructional and leadership skills and experiences on their profiles will be matched if their salary and location requirement aligns with what the employer offers. One of our team members will then manually review each match to make sure the role could potentially be a good fit for the candidate. If a match is found, then our Talent Services team will directly reach out to jobseekers via email to confirm interest and follow up with next steps!

While that seems like a lot of steps, all you, as a jobseeker needs to do once you finish building your profile is sit back, relax, and check your email.

So how can jobseekers increase their chances for matching with one of our employer partners?

  1. Build your WorkMonger for the job you want. That means if you are looking for a program management role, your profile should highlight your program management experiences.
  2. Same goes with your resume. Instead of having a general resume that can be applied to multiple roles, create a resume that gears towards the type of role you want most.
  3. Be as open as possible in your profile. For example, if you’re not sure if you’re open to a particular type of organization (school district versus non profit, for example), err on including it. That will increase your chances of being matched, and because we always send matches directly to you first, you can opt in or out of any opportunity. So, if your goal is to increase the number of opportunities shared with you, we’d recommend being flexible in your preferences.
    • One note on salary: as cost of living disparities increase across the country, we’ve noticed salaries for our job seekers in our most expensive cities are often hard to match, even if a role is remote or in a location you’ve indicated you’re open to. If you do live, or used to live, in one of these cities, consider checking out a cost of living calculator, like this one from CNN, to calculate a broader salary range.
  4. Our biggest, most important tip: Update your profile regularly. Did you recently move? Got a promotion? Had an increase in your desired salary? The more frequently you update your profile, the more aligned your matches will be!

With that being said, since the number of roles our Talent Services Team directly works on at any given time is limited, roughly around 15 roles, it might take some time for jobseekers to receive a match in their inbox. Therefore, our WorkMonger matching service would be best used passively in the background in a candidate’s job search. To take a more active approach, I would highly recommend utilizing our education-focused job board TrulyHired, where jobseekers can directly apply to the hiring team.
