There seems to be an ongoing debate about leadership vs. management and supervision. Are they exclusively different, one and the same, or are they related and inter-mingled? The author of this article provides an insight into this debate.

For many, "Power" and "Supervision" have negative connotations, which stems from our relationship with them in the workplace. That being said, rather than eliciting feelings of dread or ambivalence, supervision can be an empowering experience that increases teachers’ agency and self-efficacy.

Even in a world seeing a boom in remote work, managers want to supervise employees. Good supervision can inspire employees and keep them focused on company goals, whether they're at home or in the office. Excessive supervision and micromanagement can do the opposite. Minimizing the amount of supervision can sometimes improve performance.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

All your cover letter questions answered!
|
In recent weeks, the topic of cover letters has come up a lot in my coaching calls with clients. Below, I’ll share a round-up of the questions and my answers!
|
|
|
1. Should I even bother writing a cover letter? Does anyone read them?
Not all recruiters or hiring managers read cover letters, especially optional ones (I would hope that if they’re required in an application, they do read them, but I can’t promise everyone will). As a recruiter and hiring manager, I read ALL cover letters. Most of them were pretty boring. But sometimes they were great, and really strengthened a candidate’s application. If the cover letter is required, write the cover letter. If the cover letter is optional, consider writing it if you are pivoting careers and want to share rationale, or if you don’t meet a 100% of the job qualifications but want to still make a case for why your transferable skills are an asset. When you write any cover letter, make sure to tailor the document for that role and company. A strong cover letter will clearly demonstrate you read the job description and the employer’s mission statement.
2. Cover letters seem outdated and feel like a waste of time. If an employer requires a cover letter, should I consider that a red flag?
You might have heard that in light of the “Great Resignation” (also referred to as the “Great Reshuffle”), many job seekers are turning a spotlight on long hiring processes. Why should you submit a cover letter when you’re clearly interested in the job if you’ve taken the time to apply? WHY do you have to submit a letter that not everyone will read?
As a recruiter, I’m a big fan of making job applications simpler - this makes them more accessible for folks with already busy schedules and can increase the pool of highly qualified applications. That being said, most employers still require applicants to write a cover letter, so it’s not a red flag. Actual red flags on an application - requiring you to pull a credit report and submit that on an application, or sharing your current/previous salary.
3. How long should my cover letter be?
For almost all candidates, I would stress no longer than one page (roughly 3-5 paragraphs). Include an intro explaining why you’re excited about the role and employer's mission, 1-2 paragraphs providing rationale about why you’re the best candidate given your background, and close it out by reiterating your excitement about the role and the employer’s mission.
When I work with school system executives applying for roles as superintendents or commissioners of education, we often create 2-page cover letters as they serve as both a personal/professional bio while also making the case for why they are positioned to add value in the new role. The audience for these cover letters can include search firms, board members, parents, and elected officials. Sometimes they are made available to the entire public. I would only suggest a 2-page of cover letter if you are applying to one of these high profile roles.
4. Can I use the same letter for all jobs?
You can certainly create a cover letter template which you personalize for different roles, but it must go beyond switching out the name of the employer and the job title. A strong cover letter will answer the following three questions:
-
- Why this employer (what about the mission speaks to you)?
- Why this particular job (what about the role speaks to you)?
- Why you (what aspects of your values, skills, qualifications, experiences uniquely position you to add value)?
