Companies may think that hiring a CDO is the first, if not only, step towards showing their commitment to DEI work. These hiring searches are often a reactive move by leaders eager to have a person of color in a chief seat who can “fix” things. But DEI work is bigger than that.

The term “microaggression” has had a resurgence in popularity, but it’s inadequate. While the action may be “micro,” the impact is not. Downplaying these actions contributes to the normalization of hate.

DEI work in companies has grown into an $8 billion industry. While (most) of this work has the right intention behind it, the efforts are repeatedly failing to actually affect change.

How Candidates Can Advocate to Employers That They’re in Multiple Processes
|
If you’re job searching, you might find yourself actively interviewing for more than one role at a time. If this is the case, it’s likely that one employer may move faster than the others, causing you to make decisions based on the speed at which a job offer arrives versus factors like finding a good fit, salary, location, responsibilities, etc. It’s possible to communicate your sincere interest in a role while also requesting an expedited process due to competing opportunities.
|
Given that we are currently in a job seeker’s market (more openings than candidates), employers will benefit from speeding up their selection processes and approaching things with more flexibility. When you advocate up front, you better position yourself to accept the RIGHT roles versus the RIGHT-NOW roles. Consider proactively sharing with employers that you’re engaged in a few processes. Here is some suggested language:
“I’d like to be transparent and share that I’m currently interviewing for one other position at this time. I’m incredibly excited about [insert name of org and the position title] because of your mission and work, and am energized to be part of this process. I would hate to miss out on the opportunity to learn more about this role and the potential of joining your team due to conflicting timelines. When I read the job description for this role, it felt so aligned to the kind of work I love to do. Are you open to accelerating any aspects of this selection process to better match the timelines of the other processes I’m engaging in at this time? I’ve been told by the other organization to expect a final decision by [insert timeframe]."
When engaging in this conversation with a hiring manager, it’s possible to be transparent while still conveying how excited you are about the opportunity. Most employers recognize and expect that candidates will explore more than one opportunity at a time. By sharing your desired timeline and any other factors influencing your decision-making process, you both honor your time and that of the employer.
