Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Should I apply for a job even if I don’t meet 100% of the requirements?
Ever read a great job description and realize you ALMOST meet 100% of the requirements but not quite? Maybe you’ve totally disagreed with the inclusion of some of the requirements, questioning their relevance and importance. Should you apply?
First off, consider which aspects of the job requirements you’re currently not meeting. Is it just one thing or several? For example, let’s say you are otherwise qualified for a role, but currently only have 8 years of experience when the job description asks for 10. If that was the case, I would encourage the candidate to apply (especially if their resume provides multiple examples of their impact in past roles). Now, if this candidate only has 2 years of experience and the role is asking for 10, their application would be much less compelling. Of course they could apply, but they’d likely receive an automatic rejection.
It’s also important to think about the context of the role. For example, if it’s a very technical role - say a data analyst - and the job description not only details required years of experience, but also specific certifications and software experience, it would be very important to get as close as possible to the requirements. I’ve often had clients - especially those desiring a pivot to a new job function - share their frustration that their transferable skills aren’t counted. I totally get it! That being said, a hiring manager is not always in the position to take a chance on transferable skills, especially if they don’t have the capacity to support development of new skills. It’s also possible that meeting 100% of those requirements is legally required (like a teaching certification or masters in education in some states).
If you still want to proceed with applying for these roles, consider reaching out to the recruiter or hiring manager first to get some more insight into the job requirements and build a relationship (though you’re not guaranteed a response). You can also sign-up for short courses on coursera or google to gain some technical certifications that show your familiarity with some software, even if you don’t have concrete experience using that software in the field.
Overall, the closer you get to meeting the requirements (and communicating your value and qualifications through your job application materials) the more competitive you will be in the process. In this current job market, hiring managers are less likely to take a chance on transferable skills and likely have their pick of qualified and extra-qualified candidates. Your time will be spent more strategically focusing on the roles in which you are very qualified!
