Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Happy New Year! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been counting down the days to 2021. I’m sure I’m not alone. In the next few career corners, I’ll focus on small actions you can start taking to position yourself for new opportunities in 2021. First-up: growing your connections on LinkedIn.

Did you know that the LinkedIn algorithm favors users with more than 500 connections? More connections also means more opportunities to engage with amazing individuals and stay up-to-date on relevant career content. But what if you’re only sitting at 200 connections right now? Or 12 (like one of my recent clients)? Here’s how you can make growing your network easy and fun:

  • Visit the company pages for your current/recent employer. Check out the list of current employees. Know them? Send them a connection request!

  • Did you have an interesting conversation with someone at a virtual or in-person networking event, or social engagement? Find them on LinkedIn, and send them a message letting them know you enjoyed chatting!

  • Have an upcoming interview? Review the profiles of the interviewing team and send them a connection request with a personalized note. Let them know you look forward to your interview!

You’ll start to see your network grow, and you’ll get to engage and even reconnect with interesting professionals.
